Week 22 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  We were quite a bit louder than usual this week and Mrs. Doran is hoping it was because of all the excitement surrounding the week!  We of course took a moment to remember those who are hurting in our Thoughtful Thursday project.  To hear Lisa's story, you can click HERE.

Kindness is the name of the game and as a class we are working toward 100 acts of kindness by our 100th day of school. Right now we are at 58 acts so hopefully we spread a lot of kindness on break.  Also, hopefully we pass along our Pay It Forward card.  To see that project's progress, click HERE.
We were really excited on Monday when Mrs. Doran told us we were going to be in Mr. Stearns movie!  We even got to act in front of a green screen!  We can't wait to see it.  Be sure to check out the extra pictures video below to see more shots from the movie!
In Science, some of our mealworms are going through their third life-cycle change.  We learned in the Pupa stage, mealworms are making a metamorphosis or change.  We can't wait to see what happens when we return from break!
With all the excitement, many times this week our writing was scientific writing in our Entomologist notebooks.  We are writing down our observations and what we notice happening with our mealworms.
In math we learned about collections boxes!  What this is (not in Everyday Math Language) is that we know there are many ways to show one number.  Mrs. D. had many cards that she threw all over the room and we went around and got them and then had to decide which bag the card should go in.  We loved this activity and asked if we can do it again after break!
On Friday, we participated in Jump Rope for Heart!  Mr. Olack mentioned he thinks we raised close to $8000 for this awesome cause!  Thank you to all who donated! Our Thoughtful Thursday project was for someone who had a heart attack so we know the money will go to a great cause.

We were excited to celebrate Eita's 7th birthday on Friday!  We got to sing to him and all agreed it was a great day to have a birthday!

A special thank you needs to go to Claire's mom and all the moms who came and helped with our Valentine Party.  You can see a video from the party by clicking HERE and extra pictures from the week by clicking HERE.  Don't forget when we return that our Hundredth day of school will be Wednesday!  Can't wait to see the shirts everyone makes to celebrate 100 days of learning!
Enjoy your mid-winter break!

Week 21 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  With two snow days it was a short week but we sure packed in A LOT in the three days we had together! We also were able to lift up Mr. & Mrs. Speidel in our Thoughtful Thursday project that you can see HERE.  Mrs. Doran already heard that Mr. Spiedel has asked his daughter to save the video to his computer.  It looks like Room 119 continues to be good medicine for those in need!

We have probably told you by now that there are extra bodies in our room now... INSECT bodies!  On Wednesday Mrs. Doran got two kinds of insects and we were busy setting up habitats and making observations!  We have two class habitats for wax worms.
We made individual habitats for our Mealworms and we each have two mealworms of our own (in addition to a classroom habitat of mealworms).  We LOVE our time with our insects and almost everyone has handled the insects and named our new pets (we have probably been asking you if we can take these guys home- but don't worry, we have a lot more to learn from them in Room 119 first).
With all our time with the insects, Mrs. Doran hasn't met with all our new reading groups but she will next week.  We did go book shopping with new "Just Right" shopping lists.  Remember to keep working with us at home and rereading those books to help us improve fluency.
We added to our Time Order Words Target last week and this week began writing "How To" writing pieces.  Most of us have been writing "How To" pieces about food, but we learned there is a 'recipe' to writing these pieces too.  We wrote what we felt was a good recipe start for us.  We will continue to work on these next week.
In math, we took our Unit 5 Assessment and those will be coming home next week.  Overall we did really well and are also able to explain our math thinking orally.  We will be working toward putting our thoughts about math in writing too.
We also liked learning about math Fact Families.  Fact Families are when you take 3 numbers and can create four number models from them.  For example, with the numbers 8, 2 and 10 you can make
8+2=10
2+8=10
10-8=2
10-2=8
We ended the week with an exciting Mystery Reader.  Eita's mom came in and read "Snowmen at Night" and she did a wonderful job.  She also showed us the same book in Japanese and read it to us in Japanese WHICH WE LOVED!  We were a captive audience and were so glad she showed us both books!  It was certainly a special treat for us.

As always this is just a snapshot of our week.  To see more (including more insect action) click HERE. Don't forget to work on our "hundred acts of kindness"!  To see what we've done so far you can click HERE.  LLE is also excited about our Pay it Forward Project.  To see the explanatory video about the project you can click HERE. Loon Lake staff and students also are sharing some of their ideas for PIF. To see that video, you can click HERE.

Week 20 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  Our week wasn't typical, but it sure was fun! Of course we did do our Thoughtful Thursday project.  This week it for a special little girl named Anna who attends school in our district.  To see what we did for Anna, you can click HERE.

One of the reasons our week was not typical was because we did iReady testing in the computer lab.  We were tested in reading and math.  Although Mrs. D. reminded us to take our time and go slow, we still had quite a few people go too fast.  Overall we did much better and will take the test one more time later in the year.
We also started learning about insects!  Unfortunately, our insects were coming from out east and the snow-storm delayed their arrival so we're still waiting for them.  We still learned about what all insects need and set up a habitat for them.
We also learned about insects from Bill Nye and Mrs. Doran taught us a song about insects.  You can hear us perform it by clicking HERE.  Mrs. D. also put it on twitter/fb.
In reading this week we were working on making connections with how characters feel.  We've done a lot with empathy this year so we did really well with this!
In math we worked on in and out rules.  Basically, what we did was practicing adding or subtracting the same number to a group of numbers so 5+5, 6+5, 12+5... etc.  We also took a practice test.  Be sure to look over our tests and practice those items that may have been confusing to us.
In writing we've really been working on our targets.  As a class most of us are using 3 or more time order words in our writing to move our stories along.  We're also meeting targets and getting new targets!
We ended our week with a Mystery Reader!  Cooper's mom (who also comes in and helps on Fridays) came in to read a wonderful book to us!  She did a great job and we loved having her!

As always, this was just a snapshot of what we did!  To see more, you can click HERE.

And... since Mrs. D. is late getting this out to you,
ENJOY YOUR SNOWDAY ON MONDAY!!
