Happy First Week of School!

Greetings from Room 119!
We had a GREAT first week in first grade! We are busy learning about routines, expectations, and about each other! Although it was only a 3 day week (due to weather), Mrs. Doran has already had the opportunity to meet with most of us individually. She's excited to get to read with each of us by the end of next week!

Although she will only be posting here monthly, she has many other forms of communication. You can see pictures through Remind and on her class facebook page and Twitter and she will send a weekly email blast each Monday to let you know what to expect for the week. You can also see detailed information on our daily lessons in Google Classroom so be sure to join and check in if you haven't.

Each week we do a Thoughtful Thursday project that Mrs. D. calls our "Most Important Work" because we learn about other and that though there may be struggles in life we can find bright spots and BE bright spots. Mrs. Doran will send these projects to you weekly in her email blast or you can see all our projects by clicking HERE.
And if you know someone who could use some encouragement from some Fabulous First Graders, click HERE.

It's going to be a wonderful year!

A Year in Review!

What a year it has been! There were quite a bit of tears the last week of school as the realization that our family unit in Room 119 was nearing an end. It was a year full of growth both socially and academically and I will truly miss my little coworkers and hope that they will come visit in the future. Please know I'm here for you if you need me. Please don't be a stranger.
In Google Classroom I have posted some fun things to do this summer if you are interested including lots of read-alouds from me.
Below are some videos from our time together. The still pictures from these videos were often posted to our class FB page.
For each video, you can click on the name of it in the upper left hand corner to view it in YouTube.
You can also see a playlist of the MANY people you lifted up for Thoughtful Thursdays by clicking HERE.
Have a wonderful summer!
Mrs. Doran

Week 26 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 and Happy March!

March is reading Month and you can see our Reading Month Calendar by clicking HERE. We had fun with Suess Activities on Wednesday (his birthday) but Mrs. Doran was busy working with some of us and testing to get any pictures. We were a bit chatty for our sub but got better as the week went on.

This week our Thoughtful Thursday project went to the people of Ukraine, especially the family of our friend, Sofia. To see the project we made, you can click HERE.

A very Happy Birthday to Halu who had a birthday over the break! Sto Lat!

We are excited about all the changes that have happened to our mealworms. We can take them home next week (with your permission). We also watch as our milkweed bugs get bigger each day. We have crickets now too!

The district has asked us to spend 45 minutes in math lessons on iReady and 45 minutes in reading lessons on iReady each week. We didn't quite make that time this week but will next. Mrs. Kidder is having a friendly competition to see which grades can pass the most lessons. Ask us about it! We can do iReady lessons at home too if we want.

We started our new unit in math. We are so strong in our number sense! We were telling time to the hour too. Mrs. Doran is still waiting for some friends who were out last week to finish the last assessment before she sends it home.

We write in math, writing, science and more! Here we are writing and mailing our letters to Mrs. Kidder (we started them before break). If we would like to send a letter to someone in LLE through the LLE post office (staff or other students), we can purchase a sheet of stationery for 5 cents and the 5th graders will deliver them.

With it being reading month (and lots of Mystery Readers on deck), we heard from two Mystery Readers this week!! Trinity and Lincoln were surprised and we all loved the books that Trinity's dad and Lincoln's mom read to our class!

Have a great week!

Weeks 24 & 25 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 and a jam-packed last two weeks for us. We had Snow Days, Hundred's Day, Valentine's Day and more! We also lifted up two people. You can see our project for Cam's Uncle, Tim Shaw, HERE.

You can see our project for Dr. Don (Mrs. Doran's Dad's friend) by clicking HERE.

Hundred's Day was a blast! We wrote about hundreds, did math with hundreds, read about hundreds, moved with hundreds and more! Many dressed up as old people or had special shirts to celebrate. It's hard to believe we are more than halfway through our time together.

We finished up our reading unit with a need from the kindergarteners for audio books. We worked hard and many of us chose to record books for them. They are outstanding! Mrs. Doran put them in our classroom in case we want to add to our library or if you too may want to hear a great book.

Our study of insects continues and some of us have pupas and even a few beetles! It has been very exciting. We also got new insects called Milkweed Bugs and made a habitat for them.

We finished our unit in math and will begin a new one when we get back after break. A few friends are still finishing up. Mrs. D. will get them in Skyward by the end of next week.

In addition to writing reviews, Mrs. D taught us how to write and address a letter through our LLE post office. We wrote letters to Mrs. Kidder. If we would like to purchase stationery to send mail to friends at LLE we will need 5 cents per sheet.

Our Valentine's Party was so much fun!! Mrs. Doran made a video of pictures she took that you can see by clicking HERE. Special thanks to those who sent in games, crafts, and snacks! We had a blast and are so very thankful for you!

A big Happy Birthday to our friend Alena! Sto Lat!

We loved having Ben's cousin as a Mystery Reader! He did a great job and inspired many of us in our own reading for the kindergarteners! Mrs. Doran sees some more Mystery Readers which is great because Reading Month is around the corner! If you made a video, she will send you a video of the big reveal after she shares your video with us!

Just a reminder that after break some families may choose to no longer wear masks while some will continue to wear masks. Remember to always be kind. Thank you for keeping us home when we are sick and remember you can always check in Google Classroom to review all we're doing in Room 119.
Have a great week!

Week 23 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! We had a short week due to the snow days on Wednesday and Thursday! Then we had a lot of fun in the snow on Friday when we celebrated Global School Play Day! Mrs. Doran did some playing with us but managed to take some pictures and videos that you can see by clicking HERE.

Since we were not in school on Thursday we did not have a Thoughtful Thursday project but will have one again next week. We did get some nice mail from a Thoughtful Thursday recipient! We love getting mail!

Did you know that we start out each day writing our name and a nice message while singing a morning song. This is such a great way to start your day! We recommend positive words and music for everyone. It's a great way to set up your day for success!

We also work on forming letters each day and becoming more fluent with our writing. We're getting better and better. We now are focusing on only certain letters- that start with a "magic c" or letters some of us had a bad habit of starting at the bottom instead of the top.

Our reading lessons this week focused on comprehension and understanding. We really focused on "making movies in our minds" and paying attention to dialogue which is a big word that means when characters are talking. We searched for quotation marks and the different clues authors give to not only show WHO is talking but HOW they are talking. We acted both of these things out and did a great job!

We continue to observe our mealworms. Mrs. Doran got the call about the snow day before leaving school for the day on Tuesday so she gave them a new water source of a piece of apple for us.

In writing we are still sharing our opinions. This week we shared our opinions about books in the form of a book review.

We were SOOOO excited to finally have a Mystery Reader again on Friday! Kamy's mom did a great job reading to us and we loved the book! Mrs. D. took a video of the clue revealing, the start of us listening to the story and a big thank you from us to Kamy's mom! We sure hope we'll have more Mystery Readers! Ask Mrs. Doran any questions you may have and check out our Google Classroom under Classwork for other details you may need.

Have a great week!

Please note with the Snow Days our new 100th day of school is February 10th!
Mrs. Kidder is asking all of LLE to dress like we are 100 years old for our 100th day of school!
If you have a 100th Day shirt, feel free to wear it on the 101st day of school!

Week 22 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 and another great week of learning! Remember, if you are absent or would just like to review what we are learning, check out our Google Classroom! This week's Thoughtful Thursday project went out to Papa Jim. You can see the project we made him by clicking HERE.

We finished a bend in our opinion/review writing unit and met with partners to edit our work and get advice on some of our goals. We did a great job with this!

A highlight in math was certainly our scroll work! Some of us have written numbers so high that our scrolls are taller than we are. Many of us have asked to take papers home to continue to work on our scrolls. Mrs. Doran also put a link in our math bin in Google Classroom if we run out and want to do more. We sure are motivated! If you have empty toilet paper rolls (the cardboard part) that you could send in for us to use to house our scrolls, we'd love it!

You have probably heard of the BIG excitement in Room 119! We are now entomologists! We each set up a habitat and now have two mealworms to observe and study! We are so excited! Ask us what four things all insects need!

Rasheed (our Lion friend who also helps us in phonics) disappeared from our classroom! We were worried but then he sent us a postcard from NYC! We've been learning all about vowel teams! Ask us what we know about vowel teams.

February is around the corner and full of fun! Be sure to check Mrs. D's email or Skyward for all the exciting details!
PS. We love Mystery Readers!

Week 21 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! This week for Thoughtful Thursday we lifted up Panda and you can see her video HERE. If we have an older sibling or neighbor who had Mrs. Doran, they lifted up Panda too. She has gotten a project since her very first year and is now in second grade! She's amazing!

We got a card this week from Mr. Bill thanking us for our project and we also got a special delivery from Mr. Mike (who nominated Molly) of LOTS of new markers for our projects! We were so excited!! We love mail in Room 119 for sure and are learning that our small acts of kindness can make a big difference!

Most of us finished our iReady reading diagnostic and we did GREAT over all. Some of us grew 150% since our assessment in the fall. Mrs. Doran will send home all the information once everyone is done.

When those present in class were done, we asked Mrs. Doran if we could have a bit of time in the "classroom" (aka Google Classroom). We love checking things out. Remember you can go over all of our lessons in there, review any lesson, access our math curriculum and more! Remember too if you are absent Mrs. Doran will post a video of what you missed. Please make sure you check it out as it's hard to keep track with so many in and out. Still, thank you to all those staying home when they are sick! Mrs. Doran appreciates that more than you know!

We had some brand new concepts introduced to us in math this week. We learned about the dime and we also learned about the math symbols greater than and less than. Ask us about it!

A very Happy Birthday to our friend Stella who turned 7! Sto Lat!

No Mystery Reader again this week but we'd sure love to have you!
Have a wonderful week.
