Week 28 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! Our Thoughtful Thursday Project went out to Mrs. Janice. You can see her project by clicking HERE. We used a different song and you may just recognize a face in the pictures at the end. If you know of someone who could use some encouragement in the form of a Thoughtful Thursday project, let Mrs. Doran know.

We started the week with an AWESOME author's visit assembly by Ruth McNally Barshaw. It was an excellent assembly. Ask us about it!
We also had a LLE Leader assembly. We were so proud of our friends from Room 119 who were recognized! Way to go, Logan and Isaac!
Our friend, Eric turned 8 and we had fun celebrating him!
In writing we worked on persuasive and opinion writing (or as we like to call it OREO writing). We really enjoyed taking a stance on something and supporting it through our writing. We will publish one of our pieces next week.
In math we've been doing a lot of measuring! We have measured items, distance and even people! We especially enjoyed estimating how long Room 119 was in second graders. We also loved measuring our standing jumps!
We planted wheat seeds this week but we planted them without any soil. We're eager to see what happens and if our seeds will have sprouted by next week.
We are loving Flashlight Fridays! Reading month has been so much fun. Next Friday we will be cuddling up with our books all day and what better way to do that than in our comfy pajamas! We can't wait! So mark your calendars for pajama day (Mrs. D. will send a reminder in the email blast if you are reading this prior to Monday).
We ended the week with a special Mystery Reader. Wyatt was so excited when it was revealed that HIS mom was the Mystery Reader. We loved the books she read. If you would like to be a Mystery Reader, check out the Mystery Reader tab on the blog and send Mrs. D. an email.

Have a great week!

Week 27 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! This week's Thoughtful Thursday project went out to Miss Sherry. Mrs. D's computer decided to die last week, so she's still working on figuring out the bugs. Still we did a great job and you can see our project by clicking HERE. If you know of someone who could use a project, please email Mrs. Doran.

We have been digging deep into nonfiction text. We're learning all the text features that help us  better understand the content we're reading about.
We finally wrapped up our nonfiction summaries by publishing a favorite piece that we wrote. Next week we'll be working on persuasive writing.
In math we worked on adding multiple numbers. We were given one problem to solve. The next day we took a look at a few people's work and talked about how we could make them better and what they did well. We then took the problem we worked on and made our own work better!
We took one more observation of our lawns and they went home last week! We were amazed at how quickly they grew and were excited to record our findings!
On Friday a leprechaun showed up in Room 119 and made a HUGE mess. He even messed up our morning welcome board! The good news is he did leave behind some pretty cool little hats for us. Still, Mrs. D. was not amused. Thankfully, we cleaned up after the little guy.
Fridays in March are Flashlight Fridays! We loved just reading our books and Mrs. Doran even brought her own personal book to school to read! What's the best way to be a better reader?? READ!
And speaking of reading, we ended the week with a special Mystery Reader! Logan's big sister came to read to us and did an amazing job! If you would like to be a Mystery Reader, be sure to check out our Mystery Reader page for a date and email Mrs. Doran!

Just a reminder, report cards will be posted on March 22nd!
Have a great week!

Week 26 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! This week's Thoughtful Thursday project went out to Mrs. Stacy. Mrs. Stacy is the friend of a Thoughtful Thursday recipient from last year. We were excited to lift her up and already her back from her that she loved our project. You can see our project by clicking HERE.

It was a busy week but we still made time for some fun things, including singing to our friend, Logan, who turned 8 this week!
March is reading month and we've been having a great time taking part in fun reading activities including designing our classroom door. We chose to decorate it like one of our favorite books, "The Witches," by Roald Dahl. We had fun making candy and turning ourselves into mice!
Did you know that every day we have two "free choice" times where we can do whatever we choose. Sometimes we get creative and choose to build things and ask Mrs. Doran to take a picture and "put it on the blog." Play is so important!
Mrs. D. finished up most of our reading testing and is going to start up reading groups again next week. We continue to focus on nonfiction text.
Similarly, we've been writing nonfiction summaries by following a little recipe we came up with. Next week we will publish one of our nonfiction summaries.
We finished up Unit 6 and took an assessment on the unit as well as a cumulative assessment. Individual profile sheets will come home next week to be signed and returned, so keep a look out for them. We still have a few students finishing up.
Our lawns sure are growing! We observed them by looking, measuring, touching and smelling! We took a close look at roots and also planted potatoes. Ask us about it!
In social studies we learned about opportunity cost and scarcity. We read a book called Erandi's Braids that helped us understand opportunity cost. Ask us about the book!
We had TEAMS last week where we learned about how we may be different on the outside in a lot of different ways, but on the inside we have a lot in common. We had fun during this "egg-cellent" lesson!
We had a special Mystery Reader this week. Mr. Pete (former Thoughtful Thursday recipient) paid us a visit! He brought us two joke books to keep and thanked us very much for the project we made for him. It was great to meet him in person!

Remember, we have a half day next Wednesday and special green bagels will be delivered Friday. If you would like to purchase one, please have your money turned in by TUESDAY. This is a day earlier than usual.
Have a great week!

Week 25 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! We had a long and full week! It's hard to believe that it's already March! Thank you to all who sent in bandaids! We are all set and so thankful for your donations! This week our Thoughtful Thursday project went out to a sweet 5 month old named Adalyn. To see her project, click HERE. If you know someone in need of encouragement, email Mrs. Doran at lauradoran@wlcsd.org.

We've been diving into nonfiction reading! We've been focusing on different text features and have really enjoyed all our learning! We will continue with nonfiction next week!
In Writing we continue to work on our individual targets! We also have been working on nonfiction summaries. We will continue writing more next week. We are really improving with this, even since the beginning of the week.
In Math we worked on different strategies to solve some tough problems. We also learned about ballpark estimates. Our test will be next week Thursday and Friday!
We came in Monday to see pods on our Brassica plants! We were so excited!! We took them home on Monday and planted a "lawn." We planted Alfalfa and Rye seeds and by Friday we already had noticeable growth! We can't wait to see what Monday brings!
We had fun in Social Studies learning about how different things are made and the different resources it takes. We split into groups, read books on a different products and made posters to share our learning. Ask us what we learned about and also about the different kinds of resources.
Did you know that March is Reading Month? We celebrated on March 2nd because it was Dr. Seuss' birthday! Be sure to check out your reading calendar to participate in all the reading month fun!
We ended the week with a Mystery Reader! Carly's dad came in on her birthday to read a special book all about them! We loved it and Carly was really surprised!

Happy Birthday, Carly!!

Have a great week!
