Week 23 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  We had a jam-packed, exciting week!  We didn't have school on Thursday so did not have a Thoughtful Thursday video for the week.  We DID celebrate 100s day and had a blast walking the red carpet, creating edible necklaces and seeing what we'll look like in 100 years!  You can see it all by clicking HERE.

Did you know that February is Children's Dental Health month?  Dr. Beattie (an orthodontist in the area) came in to talk to us all about the importance of dental health.
She also did some fun experiments with us!  We learned about energy, germs, and made something that we called 'tooth-paste.' She also gave us coloring books, pencils and of course TOOTH BRUSHES!  Thank you to Dr. Beattie for visiting us.  We had so much fun!

We also had two special friends have birthdays!!  Happy Birthday to Nathan and Happy Birthday to Nika!  We loved celebrating with you both!

On Thursday we had our first (and perhaps only) snow day! We hope that you had fun outside playing.  The Doran kids had fun and measured the snow.  We actually got an inch more after this picture was taken!  Don't forget to send us with our snow gear.  You never know what will happen in our state!
In science, many of us are getting beetles! We have a new insect joining Room 119 on Monday and we can't wait!  To make room, we'd like to give our mealworms a new home.  If you'd like to let us take home our insects, please email Mrs. D. and let her know it's OK or they will join our class mealworm habitat.
We finished up our mealworm journals.  Don't forget that we have our own Insect Reports and models to be working on at home.  If you have questions, please let Mrs. Doran know.
We've learned all about how to tell time in Room 119!  Our target was to tell time to the nearest hour but many of us took our learning beyond that.  We were able to choose to practice telling time to the hour, half hour, or five minute.  Mrs. D. was shocked with how quickly we picked up how to tell time.  To watch how we learned it (or practice) you can check out a video Mrs. D. made by clicking HERE.
Of course we ended our week with a Mystery Reader!  Micah's Grandma and Grandpa traveled a couple hours to read to the Fabulous first graders of Room 119 and REALLY surprised Micah!  We loved the book they read and were a great audience!

Of course this was a snapshot of our learning.  To see more pictures from the week, you can click HERE.  Have a great week!

Week 22 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 (or from somewhere else)!  We are finishing up a week off where Mrs. Doran was able to get healthy again and plan for our upcoming 100th Day celebration!  Don't forget to wear your 100s day shirt creation for our "Red Carpet" event on Monday! Our last week of school we did our Thoughtful Thursday project for Mrs. McClure (Mrs. Ashley's Grandma) that you can see by clicking HERE.  If you know of someone who could use some love from some fabulous first graders, please email Mrs. Doran at lauradoran@wlcsd.org. As a Random Act of Kindness (see our heart project) we made cards for our WONDERFUL PTA!  For those of you who are PTA members or have volunteered time and/or money, THIS is for you! (click on the THIS). :-)

We have been working hard on our reading and love working in our groups.  Many of us are working on writing about what we read. We also keep improving on our fluency.
Our writing has been tied to our Insect Unit! As entomologists, we are learning how to write about our observations and less of our opinions ("Mealworms are so cute").  We will be writing a report on Mealworms when we return.
In Math, we took a midyear assessment.  We are getting more and more independent at taking assessments and reading questions ourselves.  We are well on the way to becoming independent second graders!
As mentioned, we have loved learning about Mealworms.  Last week we were given a homework assignment for our upcoming Insect Museum.  Please contact Mrs. D. if you have any questions.

The Friday before break we participated in Jump Rope for Heart.  We raised lots of money for the American Heart Association and also water for Flint.  Mrs. D. didn't get too many pictures of this event since she was helping set up for our Valentine Party, but you can see some pictures in our "Extra" video at the bottom of this blog post.
Our Valentine Party was a blast and Gavin's Mom and Jonny's Mom did a wonderful job planning the party for us!! Thank you!!  We also LOVED passing out and reading our Valentines. To see pictures from our party, click HERE.

Just a reminder that we have been working toward 100 Acts of Kindness by our 100th day of school! If you no longer have your pink hearts, but still want to do some acts of kindness, you can make your own hearts and bring them in.  To see what acts of kindness have been done thus far, click HERE.  We still have quite a few to go so hopefully we've been spreading kindness over the break!  To see extra pictures and video from the week, click HERE.
See you soon!

Week 21 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  Our Thoughtful Thursday project went out to our youngest recipient to date.  You can check our Rowan's Thoughtful Thursday by clicking HERE.

This week we teamed up with children around the world for Global Play Day.  To see more of how we spent the day, click HERE.
We are also working toward doing 100 acts of kindness before our 100th day of school. Stay tuned because Mrs. D. will be posting our acts of kindness on here for you to see!
We also celebrated Isaac's birthday this week!  Happy Birthday, Isaac!
We're sure you've heard by now that we are learning about insects and we all have our own mealworms (though they are quickly changing). To see a song we learned to help us remember things we've learned about insects, click HERE.
In writing this week, we wrote as the entomologists we are, and we recorded our observations in our science journals.  We're learning how to write about our observations.
We've also kept up our reading and now have new reading groups.  Did you know we focus on reading nonfiction writing each Friday through our Scholastic News magazines?
In math we worked on finding the difference between numbers and we used an organizational tool to help us.  Mrs. D. will give us a test on this unit next week.
We've also gone crazy on our scrolls!!  We even have some students who have learned to write numbers into the thousands!  Thank you to all who sent in toilet paper rolls last week!  We now have one for every student.  We are using them to house our scrolls!
Our PBIS assembly was this week and we were very proud to learn that Maia was our LL Leader of the month for the trait of Responsibility. This month we are learning all about Integrity.

We did not have our usual Mystery Reader this week (they will be rescheduled for a later date). Instead, Ms. Hawk (who is studying to be a teacher) came in to observe us and also became a Mystery Reader for us. We were also excited when she showed up with  her dad, Greg, who was one of our Thoughtful Thursday recipients!  We loved that he came to visit us!

As always, this is just a snapshot of what we did this week and you can see more (including lots of insect pics) by clicking HERE.  Don't forget we have our Hundreds' Day celebration on Friday along with our Valentine Day Party and Jump Rope for Heart!  Looking forward to a great week!
