Week 24 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! It was a short (2-day) week but we sure packed in a lot of learning in that time including TWO Thoughtful Thursday Projects! One was for the family of Daisy (a sweet dog who had cancer). You can see her project HERE. The other project was for Patty who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. You can see her project HERE.

It's hard to believe that February is almost gone. Room 119 nominated their friend Conner for the Loon Lake Learner of the month! Great job, Conner! We're proud of you!
In reading we started a new book called, "The One and Only Ivan." Ask us what it's about! We also enjoyed some time to read with friends on "Friend Friday."
Most of us have finished our Otis books and we have improved so much from the first book that we published. Be sure to ask to see our copy and let us know what you think. These were written, edited, typed and illustrated by US!
In math we did some work with graphs learning about pictographs and bar graphs. We also had one of those "learning moments" that Mrs. D. couldn't pass up where a friend was using an addition strategy (that will come up later) with expanded notation. The most important thing in math is that we're right, the second is that we can do things efficiently. Many of us found this new strategy very efficient and even wanted to do more during Free Choice! Ask us how it works!
When we came back from break we were so excited to see FLOWERS on our Brassica plants. With the flowers we learned about Cross Pollinating. We also talked about how seeds travel. Ask us about these things!
It was great to end our week with a Mystery Reader (with half day Fridays recently, it had been a while). We were also VERY excited because it was a male reader! Morgan's dad came in to read to us and did a great job! Thanks so much for coming in to read to us!

With "March is Reading Month" around the corner, don't forget to clean out those bookshelves so you can share your beloved books with someone new!

Week 23 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! We had a great and fun week. This week's Thoughtful Thursday project was a first in Room 119's history. Our love is being sent across the pond! Check out the project we made for Gill by clicking HERE (link will be added once it is OK'd by the nominator).

Room 119 loves reading and we're doing so well. We finished up the second book in the series we were reading. With the midwinter break, you may want to go to your library and get "Ralph S. Mouse" to read to/with us! When school takes a break, it doesn't mean reading should.
We are VERY close to finishing up our Otis retells. We went much faster in our publishing this time around and many of us are done typing and will be illustrating when we come back.
We had some interesting findings in science. We had 9 Brassica's either not sprout or die (we think someone may have been touching the plant, and with its fragile roots they may have died). Mrs. D. planted the remaining seeds for those with no sprouts. Hopefully we'll have some new growth after break.
We took our Unit 5 Assessment and the class as a whole did amazing with the class average in the 90s! Be sure to log in to Skyward to see how we did. We have one student left who needs to take the test and then they will be sent home for you to see.
Special thanks to Mr. Olack, our PE teacher, and the volunteers who helped make Jump Rope for Heart another great event! A great way to raise money for The American Heart Association! Also ask us what we learned from Mystery Doug about our amazing hearts!
We had a blast at our Valentine's Day Party! Special thank you to those parents who planned and ran stations! Mrs. Doran was free to document the event. She posted all the pictures on our class Facebook page. You can also see a video by clicking HERE.
A very Happy Birthday to our friend, Audrey, who turned 8! We loved celebrating you! Sto Lat!

On Friday we had our 100th Day of Learning in Room 119!! Sadly we didn't quite make our Kindness Challenge. We were short just 2 acts! Thank you to everyone who participated and made it a point to wake up every day in hopes of making this world a better place.
Enjoy your break!

Week 22 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! This week we lifted up a real warrior. You can see the project we made for Eric by clicking HERE. Remember we're also trying to spread kindness in little ways too. To see what acts of kindness have been performed (and by whom) you can click HERE.

It was a nutty week that started with a snow day and then ended with a snow day! Some have asked about spelling. We'll do List 21's spelling list on Monday and then start our study of r-controlled words after the test. Mrs. D. has emailed out both lists for your convenience.
We were excited to get some reading in this week (it was such a busy week). Our book orders came in and Mrs. D. also got some new books for our classroom. Some are on our shelves to read and others will be auctioned off on Monday. Remember to bring in your gently used books for our book swap!
In writing we continued to work on our retells by retelling Loren Long's "Otis and the Kittens" book. Next week we'll start publishing our favorite retell we wrote. We are excited and wanted to start this week but ran out of time!
In math we reviewed open number lines to help with addition and subtraction, counting up and back by 10s and 100s, and using diagrams (total-part-part and start-change-end) to organize our thinking. We will be taking Unit 5s tests at the end of next week.
Our Brassica plants are growing!! We made some class observations as well as observations on our own plants. Mrs. Doran got the call about the snow day while she was still at school so she made sure our plants had lots of water.
A highlight was when we celebrated Global Play Day. Play is not just for fun but a way we learn valuable lessons like taking turns, problem solving, handle losing games and more. We played inside AND outside. Mrs. Doran posted a lot of pictures on our classroom facebook page.

Just a reminder that Valentine's Day is next week! Don't forget to make a container to collect Valentines and bring a Valentine in for each child (we have 25 students). Also next week Friday is a half day to kick off mid-winter break! Please try not to hop out early since we're wrapping up a lot of learning next week!

Week 21 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! We had a busy week and fit in lots of testing. Of course we made time for our most important work. You can see our Thoughtful Thursday project for Dawn by clicking HERE.

School is FLYING by. Mrs. D. challenged us to do 100 kind acts by  our 100th day of school which happens to fall on Valentine's Day! Don't forget to send in those hearts as you complete them.
It was a big week of testing for us. Most of us finished up the reading and math iReady tests. Overall we did great and made lots of gains since we took the test in the beginning of the year.
Read. Read. Read. We love reading and sharing our strategies. It's fun to see how what we're learning in word study/spelling can help us decode unknown words. We also continue to learn about series. We finished "The Mouse and the Motorcycle." Ask us about the chapter books Mrs. D. reads to us. It's great practice in retelling too!
Speaking of retelling, we've been retelling stories in writing too. This week we retold Otis and the puppy! Our writing stamina is so impressive and we love sharing. We'll be taking one of our Otis pieces through publishing soon. We'll do another retell next week.
Math lessons were put on hold for a bit with all the testing, but we did do some fun explorations about time, pattern blocks and multiplication (which was a big hit with many of us). Ask us about it!
We were SO excited to start our science unit this week. We are learning all about plants. We planted some Brassica seeds and are waiting patiently for them to sprout. We can't wait to see them on Monday.
Ms. Qonja came and read us a story on Friday morning. It was fun to have her and listen to an awesome new story. We have a great principal!
We ended the week with a special Mystery Reader! Hailey's mom came in to read to us and we all know her well because of her awesome work with our class parties! She read a great book and we were a wonderful audience.

Don't forget that our next two Fridays are half days. Friday the 9th, teachers will be in professional development classes and on the 16th we have a half day leading into midwinter break.
