Week 39 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! It's hard to believe this was our last week of school. We did some curriculum of course including learning about the History of Walled Lake and a big math review from the year, but we also did a lot of reflecting. We had a great year together and completed 38 Thoughtful Thursday Projects, which Mrs. Doran always told us was our "Most Important Work." She was so proud of our projects and hopes we will continue to spread kindness in our own ways.

We reflected on our time together in what is called a "chalk talk" where we don't talk, but our pens do. We enjoyed sharing and reading what others wrote as well. You can see our responses below. If you have not yet reflected on your time in Room 119 through Mrs. D.'s survey (we've stopped at 15 responses), Mrs. Doran hopes you will respond to her SHORT, ANONYMOUS survey that you can reach by clicking HERE. Thank you to all who have responded thus far.

This week was also a week of celebration! We had a great year together and one way we celebrated was with a pizza lunch provided by Hassan's family! Some of our families let Mrs. Doran know how excited we were that we no longer had to pack school lunches for the year! Thank you to Hassan's family! If there's one thing we like in Room 119, it's PIZZA!

We also celebrated the end of the year with a nice party that Peyton's mom planned and Hassan's dad also helped with. We had fun with these giant saran wrap prize balls that were full of treats and also enjoyed popsicles! After that we had fun playing with one another on the playground. We gave Mrs. Doran a very generous class gift too! It was a beautiful day!
We also celebrated the birthdays of two friends and had fun singing to them!
Sto Lat, Eli!

Sto Lat, Hassan!

On our last day, we showered Mrs. Doran again with crazy love (THANK YOU) and she gave us each a book (in a series she read to us) and a special bookmarks that she read aloud sharing a special memory she had of each of us. We also signed yearbooks and visited with our 5th grade buddies before clapping them out! It's hard to believe that some in the group (pictured below) were in Room 119 just like us and are now off to middle school! We wish them all the best!

Dear Second Third Grade Families,
It has been such fun working with you and your amazing children this year. I hope that you enjoyed your time in Room 119 and as I told your children, I hope you will stop by and say hello. I told them, no need to ever knock, Room 119 will always be a home to them.
Please feel free to come back to this blog when you blink and your children are off to middle school, high school, and beyond. I think it's safe to say that time really does fly when you're having fun and we had a lot of fun.
Report cards will be posted on Skyward on Friday. Please be sure to READ over the summer and keep up with the iReady lessons. You can find the login page by clicking HERE. In addition, Mrs. Doran has a summer blog with ideas to avoid the summer slump that you can access by clicking HERE. Wishing you all a wonderful and restful summer! Please keep in touch and see you next year! It will be here before you know it!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Doran

Week 38 in Review

Greetings from Camp Pinewood (which was a name we came up with and voted on)! We had a blast our last full week of second grade! Room 119 was transformed into the great outdoors and we had fun while also getting a lot of learning in! Mrs. Doran posted over 280 photos on our class facebook page. If you are not on facebook, we think you can still access the pictures HERE if not, below is a sampling of what happened last week! You can also click HERE for a tour of our campground.

Just like "real" camp we sang songs, went on hikes and of course PLAYED! Play is something that has been important in Room 119 all year and it didn't stop when camp started. Thankfully, all "play" time was able to happen OUTSIDE of Camp Pinewood (yay for sunny days).
Some of us had fun making our own camp shirts. Here are some of our creations. They turned out GREAT!!! This was optional. We worked on them inside as we arrived at camp and finished them after our hike and during play!
What happened most at camp was probably our study of weather! We learned and explored air and learned even more about weather! Exploring is the best way to learn about science (and it's FUN too!).
Math also happened at camp, usually around our camp fire. We had a great review of Unit 9 and took our last regular assessment of the year. We found places that were comfortable for us to work on our test. Please return tests and checklists as soon as possible.
There were many other things that happened at camp. We had awesome camp journals with songs, and fun sheets about math, reading, word study and much, much more! We made our camp banner, had a guest science speaker and also had a special visit from Camp Counselor Doran's dad, niece and nephew who read "The Giving Tree" and acted it out!
Reading under the stars was definitely a favorite pastime! We all had the opportunity to read in one of two tents using flashlights. We also heard night sounds when the sun went down and stars came out! It was fun to hear additional sounds to our usual roar of the campfire.
Another favorite was certainly mail call! Thank you so much to all who wrote letters we ALL received at least a couple letters from home and some of our amazing families wrote extra letters to ensure everyone had something to open each day. We also had care packages from the families of Liam, Adyn, Hassan, Leah, Peyton and Eli! We also were surprised to get a book from a Thoughtful Thursday recipient. The Nana of Greyson (former Room 119 alum) sent us each our very own book (see bottom picture).
In this picture you can see some the vines we made! Here we are taking our last spelling test. We'll review compound words next week (yes- we'll still be covering things next week). It sure was a great week!
Each day we ended our time at camp by writing our families to let them know what we were doing and to answer their letters. Letter writing is such a great way to make writing fun! Consider getting a pen-pal this summer! Everyone loves mail!

It's hard to believe we only have 3.5 days left! As Mrs. Doran works on report cards and sends you feedback on our learning gains and suggestions to work on, she was hoping you would do the same for her. Please click HERE to answer a SHORT, ANONYMOUS survey about your experience in Room 119 this year. Thank you in advance!

Week 37 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! It was a fast week with Memorial Day on Monday and Field Day on Friday. This week we lifted up our friend Adyn's Papa. You can see the project that we made for him by clicking HERE.

So many fun connections this week. While reading, many of us  noticed the plural pattern we studied this week for when a root or base word ends in a "y." We've also gotten so fast at putting things in ABC order!
Mrs. D. didn't snap too many reading pictures this week. She's been busy reading with us though. We also continue to read our "Humphrey" book during read-aloud. Ask us about it!
With iReady testing done for most of us, we were back to writing informational text and scientific writing. Our leads and organization are getting so much better. Now we will be focusing on our closings.
In math, we are finding Unit 9 to have a lot of review in it (which is what we do for "math warmups" every day anyway). We had a successful week of measuring, multiplication and more. We'll be taking our Unit 9 test next week at "camp."
Our friend, Jory, left us a bit early this week. There were lots of tears but we are looking forward to seeing her again in third grade! It's hare to believe we only have 9 days left of school!
Field day was SO MUCH FUN!! Thank you to all the parents who volunteered! Mrs. Doran posted a lot of pictures on our class facebook page! Don't forget to check them out!

Have a great week and don't forget to write us while we're at camp! Looking forward to a great week!
