Week 35 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  This week's Thoughtful Thursday went out to someone in our own district!  Be sure to check out Vicki's video by clicking HERE and keep her in your thoughts.  We already heard back from her and she was so thankful.  We're hopeful she will be able to come in and perhaps read to us!

It was a WaCkY week!  We had spirit week, a field trip and Field Day but we still got in some other learning too.  We took a look at how water affected different solids and documented it in our Science Notebooks!
Mrs. Doran spent a lot of time finishing up our testing!  We did OUTSTANDING!  She is so impressed with our growth as readers this school year! 87% of us were at or above grade level! Don't forget to keep reading.  The best way to improve as a reader... READ!
TEAM TWIN TUESDAY!

WaCkY WeDnEsDaY!

We also continue to celebrate our summer birthdays by wishing our friends a Happy UNBirthday!
Both Liam and Grant will be turning 7 this summer!  If we have a birthday in the summer that you would like to celebrate, don't forget to let Mrs. D. know!
We had a GREAT time on our Field Trip Thursday!  Mrs. D. took a lot of pictures and put them together in a video that you can see by clicking HERE.  Special thanks to Cooper's Dad, Taylor's Dad, Yatiri's Mom, Austin's Mom and Landon's Mom for chaperoning.  Landon's Mom also sent some pictures she took that were added to the video!
We had a WONDERFUL Field Day!  Field Day is always LOADS of fun at LLE.  For those of you unable to make it, you'll have to click HERE to see how we got so wet!  Great job, Mr. Olack!  Thank you for planning an awesome day for us!
You may have thought Mystery Readers were over for the year, but Grant surprised us when HE was the Mystery Reader.  We were all very surprised!  Grant did a great job and of course the Mystery Reader takes a picture with those who matter most to them so we got a big group picture!  It's fun being part of the Room 119 Family!

Mrs. D. didn't take too many "Extra" pictures (that weren't already in other videos this week) so there will not be an "Extra Picture" video.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT FIRST GRADE CAMP STARTS MONDAY!!
We are really excited about it.  Don't forget to send us mail!  To review the Camp Note that went home last week, you can click HERE.

Week 34 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  This week for Thoughtful Thursday, we lifted up Sophia's cousin Noah who recently broke his femur!  To see the project we did for him, you can click HERE.

We are almost finished with our Everyday Math Journal.  They will be coming home next week.  We've had a lot of fun reviewing concepts.  We're working hard on improving our math fluency.  You can help us with this too.  Ask us how we play the "Bridge" game in school.  It was a new favorite!
We also took the DWA writing assessment!  When we were done, Mrs. D. showed each of us side by side what our writing looked like in the fall and what it looks like now!  We were AMAZED at the improvement and we enjoyed celebrating each other's accomplishments.  Mrs. D. is going to copy the writing pieces and put them in our portfolios so you can be amazed too!
Mrs. D. is continuing to test us all individually in reading. For many of us she has had to go up in levels which is GREAT!  Keep having us practice those take-home books and remember if you would like her to keep sending them home, let her know.
In Social Studies this week, we learned about trade and what it means to trade.  We'll be working more on Social Studies next week.
In Science, we mixed different solids with water to see what would happen.  We found the results interesting.  Some solids seemed to disappear while others looked about the same as they did when they were dry.
Did you hear that we have some Chrysalis in Room 119?  The only problem is that Mrs. D. wasn't sent an adequate habitat for them.  It appears that other teachers in the district didn't get adequate habitats either because all the nearby shops were sold out of them.  Mrs. D. got creative and put them in Little Blue's cage (without the bird, of course).  We sure hope they make it!

Mrs. D. is so proud of these two!  They cut their hair to donate it to those in need.  If there is one thing about the students in Room 119, they have big hearts!

Attention Volunteers!!  Next Friday we hope you will be stopping by to see us on Field Day.  The students and staff are so thankful for you that they are setting up a special tent for you on field day with some little treats to enjoy!  We hope you can make it!!

Enjoy your long weekend!  Mrs. Doran went in to school on Friday and put her daughter to work (the joys of having a mom for a teacher).  She's very excited to tell you more about some upcoming fun that will be taking place June 1st-June 5th in Room 119.  Be sure to check your child's Everyday Folder on Tuesday.  Also please remember that the field trip is next Thursday.  No need to send a lunch because it will be provided by Marco's Pizza when we get back to school.  You will want to send your child with a drink.
Have a wonderful Memorial Weekend!

Week 33 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! This week we sent out our Thoughtful Thursday to Jen in San Francisco.  She has lifted many up in her life so we were excited to do the same for her.  To see her project, you can click HERE.

We were excited because when we came to school on Monday, an old friend was there!  Little Blue (the Parrotlet) is back to visiting Room 119 when the weather is warm enough.  Don't forget to check those temperatures, we had some cold days last week so we may need some long sleeves or light jackets for when we go outside.
We were excited this week to celebrate Alicia's UNbirthday!  If you have a summer birthday and would like to celebrate it in school, just let Mrs. Doran know by sending her an email or note.
Now that No-Screen Week is done, we were able to watch the movie, Charlotte's Web.  We did an amazing job finding the similarities and differences between the movie and the book using a Venn Diagram.
We were surprised to have an early week Mystery Reader.  Ishaan's mom came in and read us one of our favorite books.  We were excited to have her come and read to us and she did a great job!

In Science we finished our study of bits and pieces of solids and next week will be exploring what happens when different solids and liquids mix.
Did you also hear that we have caterpillars in Room 119?  They are busy eating and as soon as they form a chrysalis, we will be moving them to a different habitat.  Once they emerge we will set them free outside.  We can't wait!
We took our last Unit Test in Math this week and did really well. Most of us are getting good at using tools like the Hundred's Chart to help us solve problems more accurately.  Our tests and math profiles will come home next week.

In Reading, we have been looking at Author's Messages and trying to find out if there is an underlying message the author is trying to teach their readers.  We've been doing well with this. In writing, we have been working again on writing beginnings, middles and ends and adding detail to develop those three parts.  We will take the DWA (Developmental Writing Assessment) next week.
We ended the week with our Mystery Reader!  Emiliano was so excited to learn that his mom was our special reader!  She read one of our favorite books and did a great job.

As always, this is a snapshot of what we did this week.  To see more, you can click HERE.
Please remember that homework is now finished for the year.  If you would like Mrs. Doran to continue to send books home for us to read that are at our level, please just send her a note or email (she has already gotten a couple).  Also if you would like to continue working on math and writing, please check out the "links" section on the blog as well as the "video help."
Have a great week!

Week 32 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 and Happy Mother's Day!  We hope you liked our Mother's Day gifts to you!  They were our writing all week (Mrs. D. didn't take any pics since it was top secret)!  Speaking of great mothers, this week's Thoughtful Thursday went out to a Loon Lake mom in need of our support! You can click HERE to see our project.

Mrs. Doran was so overwhelmed with all the kindness you showed her this week! Thank you for EVERYTHING!  She feels so blessed to work with such amazing families!!
Many of us also participated in No-Screens week! To support them, we also went screen free in Room 119!  We skipped over computer lab, iPods and even did our "Go Noodle" without a video to watch (we know everything by heart because we love it so much).
We continued to work on parts of speech this week in reading.  Please make sure we keep practicing reading at home.  From here on out, Mrs. D. will be testing us!  It's hard to believe we are near the end of the school year!
We have been having such fun in science.  This week we investigated different sized solids and we did a lot of problem solving and questioning!  We also got some new insects in Room 119!  Ask us who has joined us!
In math we're back to doing some review as we are getting a little rusty on some of the concepts we've learned.  This was another reminder that if you don't use it, you lose it!  We also did some problem solving!
You may have heard that we had a couple fire drills this week due to dust in the vents.  We did an excellent job taking the drill seriously and getting out of the building quickly.  Someone snapped a pic of us outside when we should have been at lunch.  At least we were in good company!

We ended the week we love to with a Mystery Reader!  Lily was surprised to find that HER dad was our Mystery Reader!  He did a great job and read us Snow White with Lily's name in it!  We loved it!

As always, this is just a snapshot of what we did.  To see more, you can click HERE.
Have a great week!

Week 31 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  We had a GREAT and fun week!  Of course we took some special time on Thursday to lift up a great girl in need!  You can read Gina's story and check out what we did by clicking HERE.

All of you are aware by now of the fun we had recycling/reusing old items to make cool new things.  Mrs. Doran took so many pictures that her camera ran out of batteries, but she put the pictures she did take in a video that you can see HERE.  She loved getting emails from  you of creations we made at home.  We loved sharing pictures of those creations with our friends!
We also celebrated Austin's 7th Birthday!  He unwrapped an awesome book that his parents got him and Mrs. D. read it to the class.  He also got to take Ollie home for some fun!  Happy Birthday Austin!
We all smiled nice on spring picture day and were so well behaved that Mr. DeWitt wrote us a class PBIS ticket!  We were really excited about that too!
In math we practiced more with our hundreds grids and really worked on understanding them and the relationships numbers have with each other!  Building number sense is hard work but we're doing well!
We learned that words can be sorted (something we had never thought about before) into nouns, verbs and adjectives!  Then we learned what we knew about adjectives to try our hand at some accrostic poetry.  We love tying different things together.  We did really well with this and even discovered that some words can work as both nouns and verbs (like you can 'watch' a game- verb and you can wear a watch- noun).  We had some great deeper talks!
We continued to work with liquids this week.  We looked at the properties of liquids and learned lots of new words.  Ask us what these words mean: Viscous, Transparent, Translucent, Foamy and bubbly.  We also noticed that the same amount of water will look different in different containers.  Containers with small bases appear to have more water because the water is taller, while those with wide bases appear to have less because the water doesn't come up as high.
With all the science we've been doing, we've been double- dipping for writing.  We have done a lot of writing in our science notebooks too.  We've done well at expressing our thoughts in writing.

Our Mystery Reader was unable to come on Friday afternoon but we finished the day with a lot of fun anyway!  We had an extra recess that we earned from PBIS!  It was a beautiful day and we loved running outside and playing with our great friends in Room 119!
As always, this is just a taste of what we did! To see more, you can click HERE.
Also, don't forget... NO SCREENS WEEK IS NEXT WEEK!
I hope you're up for the challenge!
