Week 20 in Review

Greetings from Room 119. We had a very fun and full week. This week we lifted up a special three year old who is battling cancer. You can see our project for her HERE. If you would like to see a GoFund Me Page for her, you can click HERE.

We had a fun week working on retelling stories in writing. We all worked on retelling Otis and the Tornado. We made sure we included setting, characters and all the events of the story. We did an awesome job with this being our first try at a retelling. We will continue to work on this in the coming weeks.
In reading we're working on learning about series of books. The Otis book is also a series. Series can be picture books or chapter books or even television shows. Ask us what series we'd like to read.
In Social Studies we have been learning about maps and what region we live in. We learned about continents, countries, states and cities. Many of us did not know our street name or house number so please review that with us.
In math we've been working on money. We added up items using coins and even worked on making change by counting up. Another way to figure out change (or tough subtraction problems) is using an open number line. We'll continue to work on these but be sure to work on money with us at home. Ask us about the fun games we've learned about money or log on to the Everyday Math Website.
This week Cruz was recognized for being a resilient student in Room 119. He has worked hard to make good choices even when it is not easy and he has also not given up on his academics. We are lucky to have so many resilient friends in Room 119.
On Friday we had a blast on our field trip to the Outdoor Center. Mrs. D. took 183 pictures (much too many to post here). You can view them all on our class facebook page or click HERE for a video she made of the pictures and videos she took.
Friday got even better when we got back to school. Jayce's grandma came in to read to us and teach us a little math with COOKIES. As a educator, she was a natural and we LOVED the cookies. Thank you so much for coming in to read to us.
It's hard to believe that next week is February already. If you would like to help out with our Valentine's Day party, please send Mrs. Doran an email. Hopefully you also saw the note that went home regarding making a Valentine's Day container and also the class list for Valentines. If you lost it, check Skyward because Mrs. D. sent out an attachment there as well. Have a great week!

Week 19 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! We had a short week with Monday out for the MLK holiday and then a short day on Thursday for parent teacher conferences. Because our Thursday was short we didn't do a formal "Thoughtful Thursday" project but we did make cards for our friend Nathan who is going to a new school. Since we are half way through our school year, Mrs. D. is looking for some feedback from you. Please click HERE to answer a short anonymous survey.

We continued to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King's life. We watched a movie and also read the Scholastic News article about him. We love working on our chromebooks.
We've continued learning about series and are now reading a book called "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" by Beverly Cleary. There are 3 books in this series. Mrs. D. sent home a scholastic book order where we can get our own books and check out some of our favorite series!
In writing we continued to work on letters and enjoyed writing letters to our parents telling them what we feel we have done well thus far in 2nd grade and what we want to work on. Mrs. D. shared our letters at conferences.
On Friday we met with our 5th grade buddies and learned about Snowflake Bentley. Ask us what we learned about him. Mrs. Doran also taught us all how to make snowflakes.
We had fun celebrating our friend Lamis' birthday this week! Sto Lat!
We ended the week with a special Mystery Reader. Lamis was surprised again when her mom came to read to us! Thanks so much for coming in!

Just a reminder that we have a field trip on Friday! Don't forget to pack a disposable lunch, bring an old athletic/tube sock, and dress for the weather! Have a great week!

Week 18 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! This week's Thoughtful Thursday project went out to a special teacher who could be OUR future teacher. He is married to a teacher at Sarah Banks and their son was in Mrs. D's class once upon a time. To see the project we made, click HERE.

Just a reminder that Parent/Teacher conferences are on Thursday. If you cannot keep your time or need to change a time, let Mrs. D. know ASAP. We'll be reflecting on our year thus far and making goals for the remainder of the year and Mrs. D will share some of our January reflections with you as well.
In reading we've been learning about series. We've read books from Kate DiCamillo from The Mercy Watson Series and Tales from  Deckawoo Drive (which also contain some of the awesome characters from Mercy Watson). Kate DiCamillo is a wonderful author. We also just finished the Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Ask us about it and the wonderful visit we had from Ms. Richard from the library!
We did such a great job publishing our books and many have asked if we could read them to some first graders next week. We enjoyed it when Mrs. D. read them to us. We also began letter writing and are doing great! Ask us what 5 things each letter needs!
In math we wrapped up Unit 4 on which we will be taking an assessment next week. We did a lot of measuring and also reviewed base ten, place value and expanded notation. We love math!!
We ended our week with a fun visit from a Mystery Reader! Isiah's mom came in to read a great book that will soon be a movie! She did a great job! Thanks for coming in.

Just a reminder that we have no school on Monday, January 15th due to MLK Day. Please remember that WLN is hosting a wonderful community event. For more details you can click HERE. The Henry Ford Museum is also putting on an awesome FREE event. To learn more you can click HERE. We have much to celebrate and be thankful for. We are thankful for Dr. King's message and hope to change this world to be more like his dream!

Week 17 in Review

Greetings and Happy New Year from Room 119! Our short week was cut even shorter because of a cold day! Brrrr... Don't forget to dress warm. We go outside if the "feels like" temperature is 0 or above.  We were inside all week. We did warm hearts this week with our Thoughtful Thursday project for Mr. John! You can see the project we made for him HERE.

We continue to work on resiliency here at LLE. Room 119 writes a lot of PBIS tickets and this week we got to see a "Good News" story by our friend Connor W. He did a great job!
We started a new chapter book this week. "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" is an amazing book. As us about it because us telling you about what we're reading will help make our retellings more thorough.
We continue to read while Mrs. D. meets with individuals and small groups. Make sure we're reading at home too. The best way to be a better reader is quite simply to READ!
The short week has cut into our writing/publishing time since we share chromebooks with all the second grades. Mrs. D. printed out what we typed and we learned that it it good to reread our work and edit it. After that we also had a friend to work with to make suggestions and corrections. Some of us are already illustrating our books. You may want to help us edit as well. Check out the instructions Mrs. D. emailed out!
In math we've been learning about place value mostly using base ten blocks and base ten short hand! Ask us what we learned about exchanging for ten and what it means. We'll continue to work on this next week as well!

With no school Friday, we missed our Mystery Reader but the cold temps are a great way to curl up with a great book under a warm blanket! Don't forget to sign up to be a Mystery Reader if you haven't already!
