Week 30 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! Our Thoughtful Thursday Project this week went out to Savannah's Aunt Lynda! She has made some beautiful fairies and one is now watching over Room 119! Unfortunately, Mrs. D. forgot to take a picture of it! You can see one of her fairies (and fairies and well wishes we wrote) by viewing our project HERE.

He's Baaaaack!  There was much excitement when Little Blue returned to Room 119 along with the warmer weather. Unfortunately, we were quite loud this week (especially Friday) which had Little Blue nervous and loud. He won't be returning until we can return our volumes to normal.
We were so excited to get back to reading groups this week!  Most of us are really working hard on Fluency so be sure to practice with those books that Mrs. D. sends home each week and read previous books too!
Science is back and we are learning about the stuff that makes up everything... MATTER! This week we focused our studies on solids and took a look at their attributes and learned through exploration.  Some solids were easier to stack (because of size, rigidity... etc) than others.
In writing we finished our Table of Contents and our Autobiographies are now hanging in the hallway!  We loved sharing them this week!
In math we learned that fractions are a part of a whole. We divided shapes into equal parts and explored fractions. We loved getting out the blocks and talking about the fractions we were making!
Did you know Friday was Earth Day?  We finished up our Lorax project with our 5th Grade buddies and headed out to clean up LLE's playground! We couldn't believe all the trash that was out there! Taking care of the world starts with us!
On Friday, we celebrated our friend Greyson who will be turning seven over the weekend!
He was also so surprised and excited when his step-dad showed up as our Mystery Reader! He read us an awesome book that none of us (even Mrs. D.) had read before but we all loved!

Of course this is a snapshot of what we did this week! To see more (Mrs. D. took lots of videos from science especially) you can click HERE!
Have a great week!

Week 29 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  We had a great first week back and loved talking about our vacations at home or in other locations. We are now in our final marking period and hope you all had a moment to check our report cards on Skyward to celebrate how far we've come and encourage our current goals. If you need help seeing the report card, let Mrs. D. know. Our Thoughtful Thursday Project went out to a special little 5 year old and you can see her project by clicking HERE. If you know of someone who could use some encouragement contact Mrs. D. at lauradoran@wlcsd.org.

In the month of March, we celebrated Reading Month and these awesome kids completed a reading log (minus Katelyn who wasn't there for the picture). They did a GREAT job.  Bianca read the most for our class so got to eat with Mrs. D and a friend. All of us got glow-sticks because we love reading in the dark!  Well done!!
When we got back from break, Gavin turned another year older!  Happy Birthday, Gavin!  It's like heaven to be seven!
We worked hard all week on our autobiographies.  Ask us what an autobiography is.  On Monday we'll finish up by adding our table of contents and these will go out in our hallway for everyone to read.
Although we are done with our study of insects, Mrs. D. has kept the habitats going.  We have lots of beetles and are waiting to see if we'll get new mealworms.  Our milkweed bugs are also growing! Next week we'll start a new unit of science! Stay tuned!
Spring pictures were this week.  We ALL got our pictures taken.  Our pictures will go home in a few weeks and you can decide which (if any) pictures you want and pay then.
Mrs. D. forgot to take pics in math but we made polygons with straws and also finished up another math assessment.  Next week we'll be dividing up shapes into equal parts.
Did you know Earth Day is this month?  We'll be doing Earth Day activities with our buddies.  We read "The Lorax" and then made marble earth paintings and wrote about what we would do if we were the Lorax.
Our LLE Leader of the Month Assembly was this week and Bianca was chosen as our class' Loon Lake Learner, meaning she shows all of our PBIS traits. This month we are focusing again on Resiliency.
Mrs. Doran's daughter came in on Friday afternoon since she didn't have school due to coming back from 5th Grade camp.  She loved listening to us read and even read a story to us. It was fun to see one of Mrs. D's kids (not just in a picture).

We ended our week with a special  Mystery Reader. Micah was SO excited when Mrs. D. read that final clue and learned that it was HIS dad!  Micah's dad did a great job and read a favorite book (and some of us heard it for the first time).

Of course this is just a snapshot of what we did.  To see more pictures you can click HERE.
Have a great week!

Week 28 in Review

Greetings from 119!  Depending on when  you are reading this we hope you have a wonderful spring break or had a wonderful spring break. Time is sure flying.  It's hare to believe we are in our last marking period together.  This week our Thoughtful Thursday project went out to our dear friend, Mrs. Bandy whose dad passed away. You may notice that we have some extra first graders in the picture above because we were short subs. They were great and we all felt good to lift up one of LL's best teachers. You can see the project HERE.

It's amazing how far we've come as writers! We continue to work on our own individual targets. Some of us have begun organizing our writing in paragraphs! Wow! When we return from break we'll be learning about autobiographies and writing our own!
We did so awesome in math this week! Rather than telling you again about the "in/out" problems, we'll just tell you that we have built a really solid foundation and have been able to solve problems not with Mrs. D.'s help but with our own FABULOUS brains!
As another marking period comes to an end so do some quick checks for our reading. It's AMAZING how far we've come from the beginning of the year. We have become such strong readers.  Keep up the great work!
With reading month coming to an end, we again got to buddy read with the lights out. We may have to keep this routine because it was awesome! Don't forget to turn in your reading log (if you haven't) with your reading minutes for the month.  Mrs. D. will tally them when we get back to school!
We finished Roald Dahl's "Matilda" and then watched the movie which we LOVED!  We did an AWESOME job talking about the similarities and differences between the book and movie. The reason for the sad faces in the picture is that Mrs. D told us she made brownies for us to enjoy during the movie. And she did... Brown Es. We aren't fans of April 1st and we didn't really enjoy THESE Brown Es! ;-)
We finished the week with a wonderful Mystery Reader! Jonny's mom came in and read us a silly book with no pictures~ which was perfect for April Fools Day! She also read us a Skippy Jon Jones book. Reading is so much fun!

As always, this is just a snapshot... to see more, click HERE.
Have a great week!
