Week 32 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! This week we send out a Thoughtful Thursday project to Melissa. You can see her project by clicking HERE.

We started the week by watching the 5th Graders perform "Willy Wonka." They were awesome! We are so lucky to have such an amazing music teacher!
We also had our LLE Leader of the month assembly. We nominated Noah for regularly showing respect in the month of March.
We have been reading machines! We read for at least 30 minutes now while Mrs. D. has been meeting with us individually to work on comprehension. We've really grown as readers! Mrs. D. will begin testing us again soon. We are especially working on author's message.
Most of us are in the midst of publishing our Fairy Tales. Mrs. D. gave us the option to publish in writing or on a chrome book. We'll be displaying these in a creative way next week. Stay tuned!
In math we did a lot of work with solving multiplication problems. We do this by repeating addition and especially by drawing pictures. We've gotten REALLY good at this!
In social studies we are learning about history. We are becoming historians and also finding it interesting to learn about what was like in OUR town in the past!

Due to sub shortages we had extra kiddos learning with us last week. We've been quite chatty lately but with the extra students we were actually quieter and more respectful. Hopefully next week will be a good week for us. We are out of Clorox wipes again (we wipe down our tables daily). If you have any extra at home, we'd love some! :-)

Week 31 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! What great weather we're having. We have loved the sunshine and we also sent some sunshine to a family in the community in need of some encouragement. You can see the project we made for the Barber family by clicking HERE.

We have been inhaling books. We've asked Mrs. Doran to increase our reading stamina time which, of course, she was more than happy to do because that allows her to meet with more of us. We've been having great discussions about our books to build comprehension.
Another fun thing that often happens in Readers' Workshop is we make connections to other times in our day. Eric found the word "limbs" in his book and recognized that silent "B" as something we were focusing on in Word Study. We don't always talk about our Word Study on the blog but many of us are really improving our spelling and knowledge of words.

We finished another read-aloud. We loved this book! Ask us about it. Next week Mrs. Doran is going to begin reading a graphic novel to us. She hasn't done that before so it should be interesting.

After learning about fairy tales it was time we tried our hand at our own fairy tales! We made sure we had the criteria of fairy tales as well as a lesson. We started planning and many of us have started writing a first draft.
In math we've been building our vocabulary and learning all about shapes. Some new words you can ask us about are: side, vertex, angle, right angle, parallel, face, pyramid, prism, cone, cylinder and sphere. We are also learning about area and arrays. More on that next week.

Earth Day was on Saturday, but we met with our buddies to talk about what WE could do to make the world a better place and take care of the earth. Mrs. Doran shared that she and her family get some gloves and garbage bags and go pick up trash in parks or garbage on the side of the road. If everyone does their part this world will be a much better place. :-D

Week 30 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! We had a short week but it was a busy one. We still made time for a special Thoughtful Thursday project for a former LLE student. Click HERE to see the project. If you know of someone who could use some encouragement, please email Mrs. Doran.

Speaking of Thoughtful Thursday, we had a special visit from Mrs. Janice (former Thoughtful Thursday recipient). She came to thank us and even got us pencils. We also had two birthdays this week!
Happy Birthday, Noah!

Happy Birthday, Gavin!

We have been inhaling books! We've been learning about fairy tales and their attributes. We also have been reading a great book about Edward Tulane! Ask us about it!
In writing we've been focusing on retelling the fairy tales we've heard thus far. Our written retells are really improving! Next week we'll begin writing our own Fairy Tales!
In math we've been learning all about shapes, and with that has come some new vocabulary! Ask us what we know about polygons, quadrilaterals, parallel lines, right angles, sides, vertex and angles!
We took one last look at the wheat seeds we planted before sending them home. Some of them did not grow while others did. Some the roots went down while others, they grew up. It was very interesting. The potatoes we planted are really growing and we also planted an onion that spouted! Science is fun!

Finally, we did a GREAT job in our school Variety Show! You can see our afternoon class act by clicking HERE. EVERYONE in Room 119 performed and we did a great job!

Week 29 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! We did not have a Thoughtful Thursday Project this week which turned out to be OK because Influenza B hit the Doran house like a freight train. Thankfully Mrs. D. has an immune system made of steel after 18 years of teaching~ she was a bit tired from sleeping on the couch and taking care of her sick family. She didn't take quite as many pictures as usual... she'll blame it on exhaustion...

We did talk about kindness and empathy and even had a nice visit from Mr. Peace! Ask us about the amazing assembly. The most important work we do in Room 119 is spreading kindness and being a friend to someone in need. We were excited to get this letter from Ms. Qonja!
We were also excited to celebrate our friend, Wyatt's 8th birthday! Happy 8th birthday, Wyatt!
We are doing so well with our reading stamina and our Friday Pajama Read In was proof! We read all day and wished we could have read longer! We are going to miss our Flashlight Fridays! Even Mrs. D. got to read her personal book!
We took our math test on Unit 7 and will begin Unit 8 when we return from spring break. Be sure to check out Connect Ed. Mrs. D. will have grades in Skyward when we return from break.
Our wheat seeds are growing and without any soil at all! We took a closer look at the parts of the seed and although our science kit was returned, we are continuing our observations. Ask us what else we have growing in Room 119!

We loved Reading Month! Did you know that we had our own "March Madness" but it was all about the books we read? Room 119 voted, "The One and Only Ivan" as our favorite book so far this year. Mrs. D. has been inhaling new books to read to us and even has a few on spring break with her!
Have a wonderful week off! April 10th will be here before you know it!
