Miraculously (at the time of updating this page), Myles is a healthy little baby doing very well!

71. Panda's Thoughtful Thursday: Panda (whose real name is Vivian) is a 3 year old who has been fighting a rare form of cancer since she was weeks old. Less than a year ago, she was given 3-5 months to live. Thankfully Panda's latest MRI brought good news but we know Panda's medical journey has been a difficult one. Each year Room 119 has lifted up this amazing little lady and we were happy to do it again!

Projects from the 2015-2016 School Year

68. Tracey, Trenton and Avery's Thoughtful Thursday: Our final project of the 2015-2016 school year went out to a WL family. We were honored to be able to lift up this remarkable family.

66. Virginia's Thoughtful Thursday: Someone approached Mrs. D. about a TT project for Virginia, who served in WWII and going to be honored in Washington DC. We were unable to do the project that week because we had someone else we were lifting up, but later made cards for Virginia telling her how awesome she was and we were able to learn this first hand when she CAME IN to visit Room 119. She is the coolest 94 year old to ever come to Room 119!

65. Tommy's Thoughtful Thursday: Tommy was diagnosed with William's Syndrome shortly after birth and died unexpectedly before he was two. We sent this project to Tommy's parents, Laura and Adam. 61. Alyssa's Thoughtful Thursday: 5 year old Alyssa has shown strength and grace her in medical struggles. We were excited to lift her up. In addition to being the daughter of a friend of Mrs. D, she also happens to be the best friend of one of our first grader's sister. Small world. :-)

53. Doug's Thoughtful Thursday: Doug is the brother of a WL teacher and is a beloved teacher from Clawson.  He suffered cardiac arrest and was in a coma.  We are happy that his recovery is going in the right direction now.  He is #DougStrong.

52. Emily's Thoughtful Thursday: Emily is the daughter of a teacher at WLW and sister to one of Mrs. Doran's former students (who is now in her 20s). Sadly, Emily suffered from a brain bleed which required surgery.  She has a long road to recovery ahead of her but already has proven what a fighter she is.

51. Ed's Thoughtful Thursday: Ed has served both our country and our state.  Sadly, he is unable to do his job because he was diagnosed with SJS. He has also had major issues with his eyes which have required many surgeries.

50. Emily's Thoughtful Thursday: Emily recently lost grandparents within a week of one another.  Emily was very close to her grandparents.  We are thinking of her.

46.  Brianna's Thoughtful Thursday:  This TT project was a little different.  Brianna is not sick or troubled but we did want to send her some encouragement (which really is the goal of all of our projects).  One of the students in Room 119 knows Brianna who recently followed her dream of becoming a singer and tried out for the television show, "America's Got Talent."  We wish her well in following her dream.

45. Panda's Thoughtful Thursday: 2 year old Vivian (lovingly nick-named, Panda) is the daughter of one of Mrs. Doran's friends.  Panda was diagnosed at six weeks of age with a rare form of cancer.  The week of this video, Panda went through a 6 hour + brain surgery. Panda made it through surgery and continues to battle cancer.  She has been through so much.  Be sure to watch this video to the very end.

44. Veteran's Thoughtful Thursday:  Parent/ Teacher conferences always falls on a Thursday each year and it also happens to fall near Veterans' Day.  We not only learned about the sacrifices the brave men and women who fight for our country have made, we wanted to honor them with some thank you letters and messages.  Included our "Thank You's" for some of our family members who served.  Thank you, Veterans!

43. Brandon's Thoughtful Thursday: We were all set to send cards to cheer up 22 year old Brandon who was battling cancer.  Sadly the week before we did our project for him, we learned he had passed away.  This project instead went to all of those who were touched by his amazing life.  He was a super man.

42. Connie's Thoughtful Thursday: Connie is the grandmother of one of our 5th grade buddies in Mrs. Turek's room.  Connie was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013 and had half of her lung removed.  In 2014, she was diagnosed with brain cancer and had a tumor removed.  She goes for regular scans and sadly they found another tumor that she will be having removed a week after this Thoughtful Thursday was made.  She's in our thoughts.

41. Jen's Thoughtful Thursday:  Jen recently had a seizure.  When she went to the hospital she learned she had three cancerous brain tumors, one of which was bleeding.  Further tests showed two tumors in her breast, two in her lungs and one in her pancreas and she is in stage 4 cancer.  Jen's motto is "Failure is not an option." We are wishing her well in her upcoming treatments.

40. Faith's Thoughtful Thursday:  Six years ago, Faith was a first grade student in Mrs. Doran's class.  She was recently diagnosed with Chiari Malformation.  A week after we did our Thoughtful Thursday project for her, Faith had brain surgery.  She is doing wonderful and even came up to school on October 30th to give Mrs. Doran a big hug.  She hopes to come in and meet the fabulous first graders of Room 119 to thank them for their cards.

39. Gilberto's Thoughtful Thursday: Gilberto is 11 years old and was born premature and diagnosed with something called PVL which has caused him to have Cerebral Palsy and left him in a wheel chair.  On top of that he was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.  He is currently undergoing stem cell therapy.  Gilberto is a friend of one of the students in Room 119.

38. Larry's Thoughtful Thursday:  Larry is the uncle of a student in Room 119.  About 6 years ago, Larry was diagnosed with MS.  Life has been very hard and Larry recently learned of a Stem-cell treatment that he was a candidate for.  Prior to traveling to Chicago to try this new treatment, we were told that Larry was having second thoughts.  A card they sent us told us that our package helped give Larry the courage to go through with the treatment.

37. Brian's Thoughtful Thursday: Brian is a friend of Mrs. Doran's brother.  He is a husband and a father of three young children.  He was recently diagnosed with stage 3 testicular cancer.  He is currently undergoing treatment.  He said our package came on a day he really needed it.  We wish him much health!

36. Police Officers' Thoughtful Thursday: With the recent climate in the country, we felt it was important to let our Police Officers know that we are thankful for them.  The letters in this Thoughtful Thursday were sent to our local police station but the video goes out to police officers everywhere.  We are thankful for your service.

Projects from the 2014-2015 School Year

35. Seth's Thoughtful Thursday:  Nine-year-old Seth, is the cousin of one of Mrs. Doran's friends.  He was very much like any other nine year old until life took an unexpected turn.  I'm happy to report that since making our video, Seth is doing very well and continues to work hard on his recovery.  He has a lot of support from friends, family and his community.  We were happy to be able to send him this.

34. Vicki's Thoughtful Thursday:  Vicki works with visually impaired students in our district.  She is always giving to others but had some tragedies strike one after another where she needed the help of others.  While we didn't know Vicki, we were thankful to have the opportunity to let her know that others were thinking of her.  After getting our project, Vicki was so moved that she wanted to come in and meet us.  She brought us popscicles and read a story around our 'campfire" the last full week of school.

33. Noah's Thoughtful Thursday:  Noah is actually the cousin of one of the students in Room 119!  He had an accident that caused him to need surgery and then to recovery in a body cast.  We were excited to join in our friend to lift up her cousin with a package of colorful cards and well wishes.  Noah is one resilient four year old!

32. Jen's Thoughtful Thursday:  Every week we learn about someone who is going through something extremely difficult.  It always seems that week after week we learn about someone not only with great strength but also great heart.  Jen is an example or someone who has done for others more than she has done for herself and has a huge heart for others~ especially those who need it most. We were so honored to be able to do something for the lady who has done so much for kids in need!

31. Mrs. Anderson's Thoughtful Thursday: Usually those in Room 119 have never "met" the person whom they make cards for, but Mrs. Anderson is the exception.  She is a parent of a third grader in our building and volunteered regularly around our school (including popping popcorn for the kiddos). Room 119 is hoping to see Mrs. Anderson popping corn again real soon!

30. Gina's Thoughtful Thursday: Gina is a very resilient young lady battling a very difficult disease.  One of the most powerful pieces of this project is for the children to SEE what the people we are making the project for look like.  It seems to make everything more 'real.'  Room 119 LOVED the picture of Gina in her beautiful dress near the tree and I love how many children tried to replicate that picture.  Gina is beautiful inside and out!

29. TJ's Thoughtful Thursday: TJ was diagnosed with a rare cancerous brain tumor.  Doctors removed as much as they could and treated it with chemotherapy and radiation but it appears that it is coming back.  I think about T.J. often as he also happens to be the nephew of another first grade teacher at our building.  Thinking of you T.J.  It went away once and we're hoping it will go away (and not come back) again!

28. Karrie's Thoughtful Thursday: Karrie was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor and has been through a lot of radiation and now is in the midst of chemo.  Although previous T.T. recipients have gone through radiation, Karrie's story prompted room 119 to ask what radiation was.  They were all amazed at how strong Karrie was and we urged her to keep up the fight!  Thinking of you, Karrie!

27. Uncle Ziggy's Thoughtful Thursday: Zig has led an amazing life as an educator, principal, WWII vet, husband, father and uncle (I say Uncle because he's mine).  Zig was recently diagnosed with cancer around his liver.  Zig loves children and the letters and video we made to him helped him find his smile again.

26. Bethany and Nancy's Thoughtful Thursday: Bethany is a 33 year old former teacher who had to leave the profession she loved due to health problems.  At the same time she is also trying to care for her mother, Nancy who also has had major health issues due to Lupus. These letters went out to both of them to encourage them and let Bethany know that although she is no longer in a classroom, she has much to teach the world.

25. Lily's Thoughtful Thursday: Lily is a sweet kindergartner who is about to turn six.  She was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was just 6 months old. She has been having chemo treatments to shrink the tumor as it is a place where it cannot be removed.  Lily had been very sick the last couple months with high fevers.  She was having ENT surgery the day after we did this project (while she is healthy) to hopefully stop the high fevers.  We hope that our letters will help her during her recovery.

24. Dylan's Thoughtful Thursday: Dylan is only about to turn 3 but he's already been through a lot!  Dylan was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in early January.  We were thrilled to hear that with chemo and radiation, Dylan's cancer is shrinking!  Although his treatments have made him very sick, he still has a great smile on his face.  We made him some cards of his favorite things in hopes to keep that smile going.  Hang in there, Dylan!  Room 119 is thinking of you!

23. Patty & Chad's Thoughtful Thursday: This Thoughtful Thursday project is a little different because you won't hear our signature song... With good reason though! The amazing woman it goes out to supplied the music. Patty was first diagnosed with cancer ten years ago and just last July was diagnosed for the third time with cancer (this time stage 4 liver cancer). Patty has an amazing outlook and attitude which has inspired Room 119. We were privileged to listen to her music throughout the day (she may have inspired some new pianists!). This goes out to Patty and Chad. May you always keep and share that beautiful song in your heart.

22. Shane's Thoughtful Thursday: Shane's story is amazing and I am in awe of his attitude and outlook and feel like we could all learn from his story. The strange thing about this Thoughtful Thursday is that the morning we did this project, my dad came over to help get my kids on the bus and said he had a Thoughtful Thursday for me. I told him I have a few lined up but we could add the person for sure. He started telling me about this guy who graduated from Orchard Lake St. Mary's and had a snowboarding accident. I asked him if his name was Shane. He pulled out a flier he had and sure enough- it was the same person!

21. Lisa's Family's Thoughtful Thursday: Lisa was a woman who loved larger than life and was described as having one of the biggest hearts around.  Sadly, her big heart stopped back in January and this left a huge hole in the hearts of those who loved her.

20. The Speidels' Thoughtful Thursday: The Speidels' story is one that reminds us that your life can change in just a moment.  Mr. Speidel was getting his mail when he was hit by a woman driving at speeds of over 50 mph.  Miraculously he lived and while he still has a long way to go, with Mrs. Speidel by his side, we know he'll make it!

19. Anna's Thoughtful Thursday: Anna is a wonderful and brave little girl who is recovering from a very intensive surgery.  She has already overcome so much in her nine years that we know she'll be recovering faster than most!

18. Mr. & Mrs. Schryer's Thoughtful Thursday:  Many of us had participated in the "ALS ice bucket challenge" but Mr. Schryer gave ALS a face for us.  This project was for him and his amazing wife who has been by his side through life.

17. Gary's Thoughtful Thursday: Gary had some major health issues last summer and was recovering from yet another surgery when he received our project.  He was a reminder of how important it is to remember others not only in the midst of crisis but when you are recovering as well.

16. Evan's Family's Thoughtful Thursday:  Evan was an amazing husband, father, fire-fighter and more.  Sadly his life ended long before those who loved him most would have liked.  This was for his family to let them know they are still in the thoughts and prayers of many.

15. Morgan's Thoughtful Thursday:  Morgan was an amazing 7 year old who had beaten all the odds.  Sadly on her 7th birthday she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of liver cancer which took her life.  This project was for her loving family as they faced their first Christmas without their sweet Missy.

14. Timber's Thoughtful Thursday:  A fabulous first grader in Room 119 let us know about her neighbor's dog who passed away.  She was so sad for them.  Knowing how hard it is when you lose a beloved family pet, we knew this was something we wanted to do.

13. Lori's Thoughtful Thursday:  Lori is a young, energetic mother of three girls.  It was a shock when she learned that she had breast cancer.  She has faced this disease head on and is in the midst of treatments.  We wanted to let her know that we're here rooting her on too!

12. Baby Vivian's Thoughtful Thursday: Baby Vivian (aka Panda) was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at just 6 weeks of age.  She has already beaten the life expectancy the doctor's have given her and continues to be a medical miracle.  We were excited to send this package to her and some of us were even able to attend a fundraiser for her at a local bowling alley!

11. Veteran's Thoughtful Thursday: Because we were not in school on a Thursday this week, we decided to lift up an amazing group of people because of Veteran's Day.  We learned all about Veterans and their amazing sacrifice.  We also invited other classrooms to make cards too.  We sent out packages to three amazing veterans!  One served in Vietnam and the other two were from WWII!  Though the actual cards only went to three veterans, this project is for Veterans everywhere!  Thank you for your service!

10. Mr. Pedersen's Thoughtful Thursday:  Mr. Pedersen was a beloved P.E. teacher at the high school we will eventually attend!  Years ago he was in a horrible accident where he fell from a tree stand and was paralyzed.  He is a pillar of strength and has worked hard to recover as much as he has.  Although he is not currently in the classroom, he continues to teach others the most important lessons in life.

9. Children of Iraq's Thoughtful Thursday:  We were saddened to hear a bit about what is going on with Isis and the thousands of children who have been displaced because of them.  When we learned of an amazing group that was bringing supplies over to them from the United States, we asked if they could bring some cards for the children.  They did!!  Months later we actually got cards back from these amazing resilient children.  Our thoughts continue to be with them!

8. Nick's Thoughtful Thursday:  Nick had a cancer that could not be beat so he decided to start filling a bucket list in the time that he had left on this earth.  We were able to make him some cards and a video before he sadly passed away.  Nick was an amazing 16 year old that we still think about.

7. The Willmann's Thoughtful Thursday:  Marc was an active community member in Walled Lake and then in Tennessee where he moved with his wife after retirement.  Retirement to Marc included serving others through Habitat for Humanity and other projects.  It was a shock when this active man died suddenly.  We made this project for his wife and sons who are missing him so.

6. Avery's Thoughtful Thursday:  Avery is an amazing and active little girl who had a horrific accident with her eye when she was just 6 years old.  Despite multiple surgeries, she continues to lead an active and amazing life.  We were excited to learn about her and lift her up.  A few weeks after we sent out her project, she wrote us a thank you note which included markers (and they SMELLED!).  We use her markers ONLY for Thoughtful Thursday projects now.

5. Dan & Nathan's Thoughtful Thursday:  Connie lived an amazing life.  She was a beloved pediatrician and some of us actually attend the practice that she started.  Sadly she lost a long battle with cancer.  This project was for her husband Dan and son Nathan who are missing her along with an entire community that benefitted from Connie's love and dedication.

4. Gage's Thoughtful Thursday:  Gage was an active high school student who sadly was diagnosed with cancer.  Although his leg was amputated, the cancer spread.  We made this project for him and encouraged him to "Kick Cancer to the Curb" which was something we heard his supporters saying.  It was in this video that the children started doing a 'fist bump' to encourage the recipients of Thoughtful Thursday that they ARE strong!  Sadly, Gage lost his battle with cancer.

3. Mackenzie's Thoughtful Thursday:  Mackenzie is an active little two year old who also happens to have cancer.  She is the neighbor of some of the Fabulous First Graders in Room 119 and could (hopefully) be a first grader in Room 119 in a few years.  We were happy to draw her pictures that would cheer her up as she faces treatments for cancer.

2. Cassie's Thoughtful Thursday:  Cassie's project was the first one we did this school year and the first project Mrs. D. called "Thoughtful Thursdays."  Cassie has alopecia which is a disease that causes (otherwise healthy) people to lose their hair.  Cassie was feeling sad about this so Mrs. Doran (who is a friend with Cassie's mom) bought her a book about Alopecia.  Mrs. D. read it to our class, we decided to make cards for Cassie, it was mailed off and the rest (as you say) is history.  Thank you Cassie for helping to inspire a project that will go on for as long as Mrs. Doran is teaching. :-)

1. John Schmidt:  While this wasn't an official "Thoughtful Thursday" project this was the first time Mrs. Doran turned cards her class made into a video for someone.  She learned about John (who was spending his 21st birthday in the Ronald McDonald House) through a prayer request at her church.  For whatever reason, Mrs. D. followed up on it and wanted to send cards to John from all of her amazing students (and her own children too).  She made a video of all the cards mostly to show the parents what they had done.  She found a favorite song of her's to be the perfect backdrop for the project and sent it along.  Sadly, John didn't live too much longer, but he did see our cards and we were told he liked them very much.

THANK YOU FOR CHECKING OUT
THOUGHTFUL THURSDAYS!

I was reminded how when my father-in-law was fighting his own cancer how plain the walls seemed.  I drew colorful pictures for him and wrote him cards each week to encourage him. This small act seemed to make a difference- not just for him... but for me.  I suppose this project was also partially inspired by him~ and my own son, Andrew, who died. I know the power of compassion~ of a kind word~ of knowing that others care.

And if you've read this far... thanks for checking out our Thoughtful Thursday Project and perhaps starting your own.  You may not be able to change the whole world- but you can make someone's world a whole lot more colorful~ at most you can try and that can mean the world to someone who needs it.

~Mrs. D.

  3. Laura,
I have been a lifelong friend of Dan and he shared with me your special tribute to Connie, Nathan and Dan. I don’t know how you came up with the idea of Thoughtful Thursday but it is a fabulous one. Teaching young people to reach out and share caring thoughts about someone they probably do not even know is needed more than ever in this world of ours. I am confident these lessons will be with them their entire lives and the world will be a better place because of it. I wish I could be around to see their faces and talk to them in 10-20 years when they fully understand the special gift they have given to so many people. Thanks for building another great memory for Dan and Nathan regarding Connie! And thanks for positively impacting the lives of these young people through such a wonderful exercise! You have helped make my Thanksgiving ever more Happy. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season and blessed Christmas!
