Week 14

Greetings from Room 119! Last week was a short week so we did not do a Thoughtful Thursday project but Mrs. Doran put together a video of us sharing what we are thankful for that you can see HERE.

We have become writing machines! So much so that many of us are choosing to write at home and even outside during free choice! That's some passion! We love sharing our writing and are growing so much.

We finished our Unit in Math and Assessments came home on Wednesday of last week. Grades are also in Skyward. This is just one way Mrs. D. sees what we know. We will begin Unit 4 on Monday. Just a reminder that you can always go into our Google Classroom to check out our lessons.

Our work as Word Detectives has come to an end and we begin a new unit in Phonics on Monday. We loved learning about and finding compound words. We even found connections in our reading and writing. We have found so much of what we've learned in phonics around us every day!

We did not have a Mystery Reader last week, but we would love to have one! Let Mrs. D. know if you're interested- Grandparents, siblings- anyone is welcome to read to us.
A very Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate!
In the month of December, we'll be learning about traditions. If you have not yet, please fill out THIS short survey letting Mrs. Doran know if you'd like to share some of your family traditions with Room 119.

Have a great week!

Week 13 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! This week's Thoughtful Thursday went out to Mr. Bill. You can see the project we made for him HERE. If you know of someone who could use some encouragement from some fabulous first graders, email Mrs. D. at lauradoran@wlcsd.org.

We loved singing to our friend Angelo who turned 7!
Sto Lat!

We have been a great job using number lines and number grids to solve math number stories! We are getting more independent in our journal work too. Ask us about our magic wands at math!

We continue to work on nonfiction and iReady lessons on our chromebooks. You can also have us do iReady lessons at home if you'd like. Just check out our Google Classroom and ask us how we get to iReady.

We've been having such fun being detectives in Phonics! We solved the cases of sticky letters, contractions and more! Next week is our final week of being word detectives. After Thanksgiving we'll start a new unit.

In writing we finished up our "All About Me" chapter books and are beginning to write some nonfiction "How to" books. Mrs. Doran is housing them in our binders for you.

Don't forget to send us with our winter gear as it gets colder!
We didn't have a Mystery Reader last week but would love to have you read to us. Check out Classwork to learn more or email Mrs. Doran.

Have a great week!

Week 12 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! We had another great week of school and enjoyed learning about and celebrating Veterans! A very special thank you to all of our families who have served or are serving! For our Thoughtful Thursday this week, we lifted up a 97 year old Veteran and wished him a Happy Birthday! You can check out the project we made him by clicking HERE.
If you know of someone who could benefit from one of our projects, email Mrs. D. at lauradoran@wlcsd.org.

We loved celebrating our birthday girl and friend, Eva, a bit early (since she has a weekend birthday).
We sang to her in English and Polish of course! Sto Lat!

We continue to work on Number Stories and how to solve them. One of the strategies we're learning about is using number lines! You can check out all our lessons in our Google Classroom.

We do so much writing in Room 119. We love writing our show and tell books each day and we are still working on our "All About Me" Nonfiction Chapter books. We should finish them up next week.

We continue to learn about nonfiction reading and practice while Mrs. D. meets with individuals. She always forgets to take pictures during that time probably because she's meeting with us and is on a mission to meet with as many as possible. She did remember to take some pictures of us working on a fun Turkey project! These turkeys will eventually hang in our hall!
Stay tuned (she'll make sure you see them next week when they're completed).

Finley was surprised to learn that the Mystery Reader this week was her mom! If you would like to be a Mystery Reader (or know of someone who would like to be a Mystery Reader), check out the classwork section in our Google Classroom for directions or email Mrs. D. We LOVE Mystery Readers and they certainly are a highlight.

Have a great week!

Week 11 in Review

Greetings from Room 119. Last week, Mrs. Doran finished our project for our very own Kamy! You can check out the video that we made for her by clicking HERE. We also made cards for service members who will be overseas this holiday season. We love spreading kindness. If you know of someone who could use some love, please email Mrs. D.

Speaking of kindness, Mrs. Doran was OVERWHELMED by the amount of candy that we (and some Room 119 alums) brought in to donate for kids with cancer. There was so much candy that bags were filled and then the remaining candy will be shipped overseas to the men and women serving our country who won't be home for the holidays.

In math this week, we continue to work on story problems and we even wrote some of our own. Did you know that you can check out what we're learning in math in our GC each day? It's also a great place to review.

As you know, we have had quite a few friends out. Just a reminder that when we are sick, it's good for us to just stay home. When you are sick, if you'd like you can check out our GC to see what we are doing. Mrs. D. will post a video each day sharing what we did and how to access it from home. That way we can see what we missed. She posts every day.

In writing we started our "All About Me" books for nonfiction. In reading we also continue to learn about and read nonfiction books and in Phonics our focus has been that silent "e" at the ends of words. We had a short week and Mrs. D. didn't get many pictures.

She did snap these fun pictures of some of us outside. When we saw all the fun fall leaves, we made them into a pile and jumped in them or just searched for cool leaves. We love being outside! Make sure we dress for the weather as we go out every day.

We ended the week with a special mystery reader! We had our first DAD Mystery Reader. Thank you to Alena's dad for reading to us! Mrs. D. is always looking for Mystery Readers! If you want to be a Mystery Reader, let Mrs. D. know.
Have a great week!

Weeks 7-10 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 (finally). It has been a while since Mrs. Doran has updated this blog after the death of her sister-in-law and then just the difficulty of sub shortages (no prep to get other work done in school) and other things. Thankfully she has the best understanding community of learners and families. We were still spreading kindness and you can click HERE to see the video we made for our very own Eva and her family.

Bizzy wearing her "Thoughtful Thursday Shirt"

We also told Mrs. Doran we wanted to lift HER up after the difficult time she was having and so we made cards for her. She was so touched. She is so lucky to have us!

We also celebrated two birthdays (on the same day!) Happy Birthday, Boys!
Sto Lat!

One of the things we do each morning is our "Calendar Routine" which includes some dancing, singing, and sometimes rapping. Mrs. D. loved that some of us brought sunglasses for when we sing our subitizing rap so she took a couple pictures! (You can check that out in our Google Classroom.)

Thankfully (like this picture of us after a fire drill), we should be "All Clear" to have some smooth sailing for a bit though sometimes life sure does throw you some curve balls.

In reading we are working on our nonfiction unit and reading books on Epic which is a great website with TONS of nonfiction books. Ask us about it!

We are also working on nonfiction writing while still practicing our writing fluency. To help us at home with writing, HERE is a helpful video.

We finished Unit 2 in math and Mrs. D. will be sending home those assessments soon as well as updating her gradebook in Skyward. One of the major focuses in that unit was sums of ten and finding different strategies to help us solve problems.

And of course, we had a lot of fun for Halloween. Some of us participated in Treats on the Trail and we all had fun making spider hats and more in the classroom! Mrs. D. heard quite a few, "This is the best day of my life!" comments which made her smile.  Sometimes she gets so busy with all of us she (too often) forgets to take pictures, but HERE are some pictures of us finding some amazing pumpkins in the pumpkin patch!

Have a great week!
