Week 11 in Review

Greetings from room 119! Mrs. Doran enjoyed meeting with all of you Thursday at conferences. Remember to help us set up a schedule to read each night and if you ever have any questions about anything, to contact her!
We started the week with seeing yet another familiar face on our morning news. Because his PBS ticket was picked last week on the news, Derek was able to share a story where he caught Luke G. being the five Rs! Despite being wonderful individuals in our class, we were quite chatty both on Wednesday and Friday so Mrs. D. hopes we got out a lot of our energy over the weekend!

Of course it is important that we act appropriately in school and our principal, Ms. Qonja, talked with us about discipline and behavior. She read us a book about manners and reminded us the two reasons we have rules: 1. To help us learn and 2. To keep us safe. She also told us about possible consequences that can happen if we break rules which may include detention. Thankfully we were all very respectful while she talked to us so hopefully none of us will have detention this year.
We continue to work on visualization or making movies in our mind when we read. We shared examples we found in our own books during our Writers' Workshop. We also made illustrated the Beatles song, "Yellow Submarine" and found it funny that they would be in a 'sea of green'. To watch the movie, you can click HERE. We learn something everyday and this week, Mrs. D. learned not to just copy and paste lyrics she finds on the internet to save time... there are some missing words in the video. Mrs. D. was going to correct them and put them over our illustrations, but since they covered up too much of our work, she did not. She will be more careful next time... :-)
In Writers' Workshop this week we reviewed what good writers do and came up with a lot of good things that we have learned from Mrs. D's mini-lessons so far. We were able to talk about something that we personally are trying to work on. We each have different goals and already Mrs. D. has seen so much improvement in our writing (more on that next week!).
In math this week we learned a little about standard measurement (and why it is important) and reviewed thermometers. Still, much of what we are learning is a review from kindergarten. It is important that we practice those basic math skills as they are skills which we will build on all year. Mrs. D. took us to the computer lab on Friday so we could practice those skills on the the Everyday Math website. We all have our own password to use the site. Remember if you lose ours, let Mrs. D. know and she can print you a new card.
Near the end of the day on Friday, some of our wonderful PTA members read the names of the prize winners from the Fun Run. We were excited to hear that many of us were chosen! Mrs. D. wants to thank all of us who were able to fundraise for this event. Our PTA does so much to support learning in the classroom!
And finally, we ended our day with a Mystery Reader. McKenna's mom came in and read us a great book that we really enjoyed! Thank you so much for coming in! If you would like to be a Mystery Reader in our class, check out the link on the right and contact Mrs. D. with a date that you would be available but don't tell US! One of the best things about the Mystery Reader is that they remain a Mystery!
Don't forget that our book orders are due on the 21st (Mrs. D. will place the order on the 22nd). To place an order online, you can find instructions HERE.
