Week 1 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 and Welcome! We had an amazing first week of school! We have so many routines to learn, but we've also jumped right into our curriculum! Norbert (our bearded dragon) is a huge hit and even went outside with us on Free-Choice (something Mrs. Doran provides each day because she knows its importance). Another important part of our day is getting to know our new LLE family! Everyday we'll be getting to know our new (and old) friends through a "Me-Box" that will come home (so keep your eyes open to when it comes in our backpack). When we get the "Me-Box" our friends will make a book just for us! We also made our first Thoughtful Thursday Project which Mrs. Doran calls "Our Most Important Work." Each week we will be lifting up someone in need of encouragement. You can see our project, learn more about Mr. Jeff, and see the cards that have been sent his way by clicking HERE.

A new school year can bring many emotions, so we unpacked our feelings through an activity called "Compass Points" where we thought about things we were Excited about, Worried about, Needed and Suggestions for Mrs. D. It gave her great insight to what we're feeling about our new year together.
We also started our word study and handwriting. This week we focused on short vowel words. You can see our results from the week in Mrs. D's gradebook on Skyward (if our papers didn't make it home in our Everyday Folder).
Each day we'll be enjoying a chapter book with Mrs. Doran. This year she started with an autobiographical graphic novel called, "El-Deafo." Not only is it an amazing book, it also helps us understand one of our new friends, who is hearing impaired, a little more! We're loving the new book. We also talked about what "Good Readers Do" (ugh- Mrs. D. forgot to take a picture of that chart to show you) and have been working on our reading stamina! Ask us about it and what our goal is!
In writing, Mrs. Doran shared with us that she is a writer! She showed us a book she has with many small moments she has experienced with her family and funny stories. Then she told us she'd love to learn more about us and asked us to write about a small moment that she could read this weekend! She gave us 45 minutes to write where it was totally silent (check out our class fb page to see a video) and we asked for more time! We are a class of authors and she can't wait to see the amazing creations we will produce this year! Don't forget to cover our Writer's Notebooks. You can see a "How to" video Mrs. D. made HERE. If you can't get to it this weekend, no worries but please send back the notebook Tuesday.
We didn't get quite as far in math as Mrs. D. would have liked this week because we had so many new things to learn. One of the things we learned was "how" we'll be doing math which is on white boards. Mrs. Doran gave us review problems to work out on our boards and next week will give us a Beginning of the Year Assessment so she can learn our needs mathematicians!

We finished the week with our 5th Grade Buddies from Mrs. Turek's Class! We'll be meeting with them every Friday! The 5th graders you see pictured with us above are all Room 119 alums (yes- it wasn't too long ago that they were students in Room 119 just like us).
Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

Please remember your PE shoes on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday!
