Week 20 in Review

Greetings from room 119! We are happy that you stopped in to see us. Don't forget to click on the name of the person who brought you to this website (on the right). This week we began our 'Stars for a Day'. Each day, someone gets to be the 'Star'! When you are the star, you get to wear a cool cape, lead our lines all day long, share a poster all about you and get a cool book at the end of the day written by your friends, teacher and parents telling you how marvelous you are! Check out the Stars we had this week!

Did you know that at Loon Lake we have a PBS program? PBS stands for Positive Behavior Support. Teachers and staff catch us being one of the five Rs (Ready, Respectful, Responsible, Resilient & Reliable) and write us a 'ticket'. Twice a week three tickets are pulled on the morning news and those students are invited to share a time when they saw someone using the 5 Rs. We were excited to see Sarah on the announcements on Monday morning. She did a great job!
There were two holidays this week but we were only in school for one. Though the Groundhog tells us that spring will come early this year, you wouldn't have known it by looking out our windows. We were at home for a snow day, but anticipating this, Mrs. D. read us some books and we did some activities about Groundhog's Day on Tuesday. When we returned on Thursday, we learned about another holiday. The Chinese New Year was celebrated on the 3rd and we learned about it from reading our Scholastic Magazines. Then Mrs. D. showed us some videos of how people in China celebrate. It was fun watching what we read about.
Most of us are doing much better with spelling in our everyday writing. We are paying more attention to detail and doing fun activities to help us with spelling. One thing we did this week was Making Words. We take a word and write it down. Then we cut up each letter and see how many words we can make. Sometimes Mrs. D. guides us through this activity, but some of us are really good at finding words on our own.
Something else we enjoy is making words with magnetic letters. If you don't have magnetic letters at home, you can find them at the dollar store and we love 'writing' with them. This is another way we can practice 'Making Words'.
Next week we will be taking a math assessment. One of the newer concepts in our math program that we've been learning about is "What's my Rule." You will see homework on this coming home next Monday (February 7th). We worked together and talked about the steps we needed to do to solve these problems. By writing the steps out and reviewing them, we are making them more concrete in our mind. We will have a few of these problems on our test next week so you may want to practice these with us before the weekend.
Something very exciting happened OUTSIDE of school this week. Emily was honored at last Thursday's Board Meeting for the amazing art she did with Mrs. Carlson. This is a picture of her with her award and her snowman art that is currently on display at the ESC. If you'd like to see all our snowmen, you can click here and see them. We all did a great job! Congratulations Emily on this exciting award!
One thing we didn't do so well this week was clean up. One day we left our room looking like this with chairs down, lockers open and lots of things on the floor. After Mrs. D. showed us this picture (and we missed some time from recess), we did a much better job. It is important we work as a team in here and it didn't take us long to remember how to take care of our classroom.
We didn't have a Mystery Reader this week. If you'd like to be a Mystery Reader in our classroom, click on the Mystery Reader link on the right side of the page and let Mrs. D. know when you can join us! Also we'd like to thank Grace's mom and Faith's mom for coming in this week to help us with literacy and math!
Before you go, don't forget to click on the video below. Many of us are still forming letters incorrectly. We not only practice with shaving cream, but we also trace out the letters to music.

Just a reminder that we are also still collecting food for Gleaners' Food Bank. Please consider sending in some food.

I'm very happy to know that that Mrs. Dorans first graders learned the importance of organization and that respect & responsibility applies to your surroundings too!
    Thank You Mrs. Doran!

  2. Thank you and I agree. The lessons of organization, respect and responsibility rank up there with the content areas in importance! (maybe higher in my opinion) Thanks for the comment!
