Greetings from room 119! We had an exciting week which ended with a wonderful Valentine's Day Party. Mrs. D. took lots of pictures and has added an extra slide show just for our party pictures. We were really busy during the week, but here are some of the highlights...

If you have had a conversation with your favorite first grader recently, you know that we have had some new visitors in our classroom! This week we began our study of insects and were very excited to welcome our mealworms. In addition to a larger habitat for many mealworms, Mrs. Doran gave us two mealworms each in our very own vial. We have a science notebook where we are recording what we learn and observations that we make. We learned that scientists label their drawings and did a great job in our notebooks.

In order to care for the mealworms, we needed to learn what they needed. Mealworms need four things: food, water, air and space. As entomologists, we set up a habitat that would be just right for our mealworms and many of us even named our mealworms. Right now our mealworms are in the larva state and some of our mealworms are molting. Ask us what we learned about mealworms and how they get the water they need.

Mrs. D. is in the process of giving us a Chapter 5 review. She only gives the assessment to five students at a time so that she can keep a close eye on us and make sure we answer every question. We are getting more independent in math and answering the questions on our own without relying on Mrs. Doran to read us the directions.

When we came to school on Friday, we were really excited to see that Mrs. D. had covered all our tables in red and pink paper to celebrate Valentine's Day. We spent much of the morning 'mailing' Valentines with Mrs. D's help (she forgot how long it can take first graders to mail valentines...). We also did the Candy Guessing Jar game prior to our party. Faith's and Ella's moms did a great job with our party and we were so lucky to have so many other parents come to help out. Thank you for everything! Please don't forget to see our special slide shows below.
