Week 22 in Review

Greetings from room 119! Actually we are having a wonderful break from school this coming week. Mrs. Doran gave us the week off from homework, but still hopes we will continue to read each day! She also sent home directions for our science reports in case we wanted to get an early start on it. We had a busy week and enjoyed celebrating with our STARS!

We spent a lot of time this week working on telling time and counting money (using quarters too). Mrs. Doran had hoped to give us our Unit 6 Assessment, but with a handful of students out, she decided to wait until after break to give it to us. We loved playing the 'Bridge' game and the practice we got really did help us tell time. Ask us how we played the game!
On Tuesday, we had an assembly where we heard from a representative from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Our school got a special banner for earning over $6000.00 for their charity and our classroom brought in the fourth highest amount of money and was given a Golden Pennant which Mrs. D. hung on our door. Luke F was our Star for the day, so he accepted the pennant for our entire class!

We had a midweek Mystery Reader in room 119. Many of us thought it may be a cupid (because it was Valentine's Day) or Mrs. Doran's daughter (Mrs. D wasn't sure why we thought this). Our Mystery Reader turned out to be our wonderful principal, Ms. Qonja! She did a great job reading to us. You could tell that not only is she an excellent principal, she must have been a wonderful teacher too!

In reading this week we learned about "Wondering Questions". We actually have a lot of wondering questions naturally while we read, but this just allowed us to think about our questions and share our ideas with our friends. We loved making predictions and then seeing if what we thought would happen actually did!

We not only practiced this in mini-lessons with Mrs. Doran, we also practiced it in our reading groups. We put sticky notes in different places in our books and when we got to a sticky note we stopped and wrote our wondering question on the note. We had fun sharing our ideas with our friends and many of us had similar things we wondered about!

By now you probably have learned that we got a new insect in our classroom and are now also studying the wax worm. We loved learning about these little insects. Ask us all the things we remember about them (Where they live? What they eat? What they become as adults? What they eat and drink as adults?). Wax worms have not really done well in the past over the mid-winter break and thinking it may have been because of the cold weather, Mrs. D. took our classroom habitat home and has her four year old taking care of them. Thankfully, one that he lost was found and quickly returned to his jar. Mrs. D. thinks perhaps she should have put one of her "Big" kids in charge. We'll see...
On Tuesday, our whole class was dressed in red and we had a great time celebrating Valentine's Day! Our room moms did a great job with our party and we had other moms (and grandparents) who also came to help out. Mrs. D. took a lot of pictures that you can see in the video below or you can click HERE to see on You Tube.

Tuesday wasn't our only special day. Friday was a HUGE celebration because we had been in school for 100 DAYS! We spent the whole day doing things that centered around 100! There was so much that Mrs. D. made an extra video about that too, and has included it below or you can watch it directly on You Tube by clicking HERE.

Finally, we ended our week the best way we know how, with a Mystery Reader! This week's reader was Luke J's big sister (in 7th grade), who was once in Mrs. Doran's third grade class. Mrs. D. loved seeing one of her favorite students again and was so impressed with how well she read to us. Maybe she'll be a teacher one day, too!

And finally, it was brought to Mrs. D's attention that not all of the book orders were placed on the Scholastic Site correctly. She has fixed the problem (she thinks) and has extended the deadline to order books to Wednesday. Anyone can buy a book for their favorite first grader by clicking HERE and setting up an account. Be sure to use our classroom code which is HCJ3L. Thank you for placing your online order. Every time you buy a book for us, you also earn a free book for our classroom library!

Don't forget to check out the videos and this week's slideshow of extra pictures! Have wonderful mid-winter break!
