Week 30 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 where we experienced both spring and winter in one week (unfortunately in that order).  Be sure to check the weather report each morning.  We had some very cold first grade friends on Friday. Brrrr....

We finally started science!  We learned that anything that takes up space is called matter and that matter can come in three forms: solids, liquids and gases.  We explored solids and talked about "properties" or characteristics that they had.
We continue to work on on reading daily.  Some of us are working on writing summaries in response to our reading to help prepare us for second grade.  Others are working hard on fluency.  We also had some fun reading poems by different poets.  Did we tell you that Mrs. D. is reading us the book, "Charlotte's Web." Ask us about it!
This week we looked at making patterns to help us solve math problems.  We learned early in the year those numbers that add up to 10 quickly.  We also learned that we can add other numbers to 10 REALLY quickly (we were so impressed with ourselves).  When we are adding multiple numbers together we learned it is easiest to first check and see if we can find sums of 10.  We also have been working hard on improving our math fluency.  We take math minute tests each morning and we are already improving our math fluency.  This is a fun thing to practice at home too!
We added another style of poem to our poetry books called "Acrostic" Poems.  If you read the first letter of each line in a Acrostic Poem, it will spell a word.  We wrote some together.  It was hard for some of us to remember that the words we used in our poem should describe our vertical word.  We made Acrostic Poems with our fifth grade buddies too.  Ask us about it!
And finally we ended the week with a special Mystery Reader.  Robbie's dad came and read us a wonderful story.  Robbie jumped up when Mrs. Doran read the last clue because he knew it was his dad.  He said he was surprised because he forgot his dad had gray hair.  :-)
Robbie's Dad told us that "Reading is Power" and showed us some real cool helmets he had from the Star Wars movies.  Many of us decided we need to save some money and get some too!

As always, this is just a quick snapshot.  Please check out video below or click HERE to see more fun from the week.
