Week 11 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  Thank you all for coming to conferences.  We only had a few people who weren't able to attend.  Mrs. D. will be contacting you soon to reschedule.  Hopefully everyone has received the Skyward message (or facebook page update) that Mrs. D's email was hacked!  If you have emailed her recently, there is a very good chance that she didn't get it!  She apologizes for the headache!  Please contact her through a message on FB or in a paper note if you need something.  She will send out a message when it gets fixed.

Thank you so much to the 'anonymous' person who nominated Mrs. D. to be the "Teacher of the Week!"  What an honor!  To read what that person wrote, you can click HERE.  Mrs. D. feels very lucky to all those who have sent her nice letters and said such nice things at conferences.  It REALLY means a lot, so thank you!

Who knew that the key to getting some of us to add detail to our writing was "Show and Tell?"  While this is separate from our Writers' Workshop, we still apply the same lessons we've learned there to our 'Show and Tell' writing.  We are also focusing on letting our readers know right away what we are writing about or the 'main idea'.

In Readers' Workshop we did more with visualizing or making movies in our mind.  In addition to the mini-lessons, we drew illustrations to a song.  Mrs. D. is going to be turning it into a video and will post it here when she has it complete.  We are very excited to see the finished progress.  Remember that the best are those who PRACTICE so make sure we're practicing at home.  Reread old paper books and be proud of how far you have come!

We've been doing a lot with patterns in math workshop!  Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s can help us with patterns.  On Wednesday Mrs. D. gave us a problem to solve in our "math moments" books.  She said that on Monday she went on a bug hunt and found one bug, on Tuesday she found two and on Wednesday she found three.  She said she followed that same pattern on Thursday and Friday.  We learned how to make tables to help us learn that in Mrs. D. found 15 bugs in one week!

Not only is Mrs. Hill a great helper in literacy and math but she also has a gift of helping teeth come out!  Our Tooth-Tote has had a ton of action this year!  Mrs. D. also added a GREAT new tooth book to the tooth tote that she got from Emily H (so start wiggling those teeth so you can read it... and get a visit from the tooth fairy too of course...).

We ended the day with a great surprise!  Ethan and his mom came in as our Mystery Readers!  Ethan had a bit of an accident earlier in the day but was able to come back at the end of the day with his mom!  We were all very surprised and knew exactly who the Mystery Reader was when Mrs. Doran read the final clue: The Mystery Reader comes in to help during Writers' Workshop!
Ethan's mom did a great job reading "Thanks for Thanksgiving" and later handed out cards to us so we could write down what we were thankful for!  She did a great job!

Of course this is just a snapshot of our week!  To see more, be sure to click HERE or watch the video below.  Also, don't forget to Pay it Forward!  There have already been Acts of Kindness reported and you can see them on the PBIS blog by clicking HERE.  Keep up the GREAT work!

  1. Dear Mrs. Doran's Class,
Hi! I am Mrs. Sorenson, and I am Mrs. Doran's friend from college and I am also a 1st grade teacher. I teach in Vermont, but I am from Michigan. I had to leave a comment because we are thinking a lot about main idea and supporting details in our first grade class too! We have been connecting it to our sharing time, which is like your 'Show and Tell' time. It's been great to hear students share their small moment stories at share time and then write them in writing workshop! Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving! We'd love to be in touch with your class again soon.

    Love,
    Mrs. Sorenson (and class)
