Greetings from Room 119! We had a wonderful week full of fun and excitement! We were able to watch the fifth graders' amazing Halloween Music Performance, an original play written and performed by Mrs. Cohen's class and of course take part in our Halloween Parade followed by our party. We had a lot of fun and would like to thank Shane's Mom for being the main organizer of the party and all the other moms who came in to help! They did a great job and we had a lot of fun! You can see a video Mrs. D. made of our party by clicking HERE.
We also had some fun activities this week. Mrs. D. gave us a tough story problem to solve about candy corns. A few of us were able to solve it using pictures and numbers but most of us didn't fully understand the problem until we acted it out with REAL candy corns. When we are working on homework, it often helps us to work with something concrete like coins or other objects to count and manipulate.
We did have our second unit test and will have another test next week. Our unit test will come home next week for you to see. We also worked on number models and money with Mrs. Doran in our small group rotations. We will continue to work on those, time and money next week. Repetition really helps us!
We also continue to work on reading. Remember, you should try to read every day if possible. It is good for us to practice books we know because it will help us with our fluency. We also worked this week on sounding a word all the way through.
At our school we're getting ready for Safe Schools Week! Mrs. Doran read us a book called, "Lunch Box Bully" where we learned what "bystanders" are and that WE have the power to make our school bully free. We each read and signed the "Safe Schools" pledge and it is now posted outside our classroom for everyone in our school to read. Stay tuned because our PBIS Committee has some exciting things planned for November. Be sure to 'like' their facebook page and follow their blog.
On Friday we went on a leaf hunt with our fifth grade buddies and found all sorts of interesting leaves. It was cold and windy but we still had fun getting some fresh air with our friends. When we came in, we turned our leaves into pictures. They turned out really great and are now hanging in the hall. Be sure to check them out on Conference Day!
Not only did we make pictures, but Mrs. D. read us an interesting book about leaves. We learned that leaves make food for the tree and other interesting facts. We wrote all about our Fun Friday Leaf Learning and Mrs. D. will be putting our writings in the hallway. They turned out great!
We ended our week the way we love to... with a Mystery Reader! Bennett's mom came in and read us a book called, "The Day the Crayons Quit." She had heard that Mrs. D. was a crayon box for Halloween! The book was wonderful and had a great message about the importance of working together! We were a great audience!
As always, this is just a peek into our week. You can see more by clicking HERE. Also, bagel sales are beginning again! You can order your bagel for $1. We have no school on Tuesday because it is Election Day and our teachers have professional development. Please make sure to take time to vote on this important election.
