In math this week we took two assessments and we worked on them primarily on our own. Mrs. Doran read us all of the directions and then 'let us go'. We did a great job working independently on this! The area that most of us need to work on is money. You can practice money with us a little each day by just giving us a handful of coins to count. Practice makes permanent so just like reading, try to incorporate a little math into your routine each day!
Reading is one of our favorite things to do at school and at home. Congratulations to Sofia, Brooke and Evan who all took on the 'Read to Feed' challenge this month with Mr. Stearns. By reading, they helped feed people through the local foodbank, Hospitality House! Well done!
Some of us have new books to read this week because we came to school on Wednesday Night for the PTA sponsored event, "Book-o-Bingo". Those of us who came got to see three of Mrs. D's kids (her first grader couldn't come because he had baseball practice). Ella sat and played with Ali Jane while Mrs. D. ran after her one year old, and her three year old ran in circles (never a dull day in the life of Mrs. D.). Here are some pictures she was able to take between chasing kids and calling Bingo numbers!
Each morning, Mrs. D. would spill out the money collected and we would practice counting the change as a class. On Friday we had A LOT of bills and change and so we broke down the task to make it easier. Mrs. D. first sorted the coins for us and then we counted the coins for her while she moved them (using the document camera so we could all see).
We then counted the money and wrote it down using dollar and cent notation. This has been a bit hard for us, but by the end of the week we were doing better. We start with the dollar sign and then write the number of dollars. When we say the word "and" that tells our brain to put down the decimal point (which we sometimes call dot). We then write down the change. Because we had so much money to add up on Thursday we used our calculators to help us and we did a great job. This week in our class we added $80.77 to our school's grand total of over $777.00!
Well done! And to see more pictures of how we spent our week, please click on the slideshow below! Don't forget to sign up no the right to get an email every time Mrs. D. updates our blog (you can stop getting emails at anytime). See you in a week!
Those in the area probably heard sirens go off this week. They were to practice alert drills (also known as tornado drills). We were in PE when the alert drill went off in school and so we had to go into the boys bathroom and take cover. We were very quiet and took the drill seriously. If there ever were an emergency, we would know just what to do!
Speaking of emergencies, Japan is having a crisis and the whole world is joining to help and so are the students in room 119. This week, our school wore hats (and paid at least one dollar) to support efforts helping the Japanese. Here are some pictures of 'hat wearers' during the week!
