Week 16 in Review

Greetings from room 119! This week Ms. Carter (Mrs. D's former first grader turned education college student) came in to learn with us. We love it when she is ofon her college breaks because she gets to come and learn from us and we learn from her too!
We also had a visit from some of our fifth grade student council members. They told us about "Pennies for Pasta" where we will be collecting money for children with lukemia. The class that collects the most pennies will win a Pasta Party from the Olive Garden. We each got our own collection boxes sent home in our Everyday Folder on Friday and our fifth grade friends showed us how to put them together.
We also celebrated Nathan's 7th birthday this week! We enjoyed singing to him and eating yummy cupcakes. Remember if we have a birthday coming up that you would like to celebrate to contact Mrs. D. There are safe snacks we can choose to bring in or non-edible treats or Lauren and Bryan's mom has offered to bake cupcakes that are safe for everyone. If you are interested, please contact Mrs. D.
This week in math we started a new Unit. We have been learning about place value. We learned that only one digit can be in one place at a time (ask us what a "digit" is). We did really well with this concept as it is also something we do when we count the days of school using straws. We also learned about "greater than" and "less than". Ask us about the big hungry alligator that likes to eat the little frogs. We did a really good job with this and will continue to practice it in the coming weeks.
We also did some things with social studies. We learned that as we walk outside some things are found in nature while others were made by humans. We did a great job coming up with lists of things that fell into both categories. We also are learning about maps. Mrs. D. gave us a blank map of our school. We made a map key that "unlocks" important places on our map. For example, in our map key we put a heart for room 119 (because we love learning in room 119). If you wanted to know where room 119 was on our map, all you would have to do is look for the heart. We will be working more with maps next week as well.
Did you know that we are becoming better writer's each week? Just like this paragraph started with a question, Mrs. D. showed us that we can begin our writing in lots of different ways. This week we practiced starting our writing with a question. We all have different goals that we are working on. Ask us what our goal is.
Speaking of goals, it should be a goal that we read a little each and every night. Mrs. D. has begun to test us in reading again. Those of us who have have been reading a lot have really taken off. Some of us said we don't have a lot of time to read so perhaps we can bring books with us in the car or set aside an extra ten minutes before bed to read to you. This is really important!
Because Mrs. D. is testing, she won't be reading with most reading groups for a while. We have been reading in our book boxes and the other day Mrs. D. was shocked when she looked at the clock and we had read for almost FORTY MINUTES! It helped that we had just gone "book shopping" for just right books, but still this was amazing. We celebrated by going outside and spending time with our fifth grade buddies (you would have never known it was winter last Friday...).
Finally we ended our week with a Mystery Reader. Jack's mom came in and read us a fun story that we all enjoyed and we did a great job listening. Just a reminder that this week there will be no school for us kids on Friday because Mrs. D. and the other teachers will be in classes.

Don't forget to click below to see more pictures from the week and remember bagel sales happen every Monday and Tuesday so don't forget to bring in your dollar! Bagels will be delivered on Thursday because we won't have school on Friday.
