Greetings from room 119 where snow is FINALLY outside our window. With the wet weather, it may be wise to put an extra pair of dry socks in our backpacks just in case our socks get wet. Many of us had wet socks on Friday and were quite uncomfortable in them.

Almost everyone in our class has shared the maps we made last week. We've done a good job, though some of us noticed that we did not have everything on the rubric (checklist) that Mrs. D. sent home. Those of us missing items were able to share where they would have put them or how they would make their maps more quality. Overall we did a great job and we've been able to show all the characteristics of our maps. The rest of the class will share their maps on Monday.

This week we wrote a personal narrative about a time we got hurt. Mrs. D. has been busy working on report cards, but hopes to add the writing pieces to our Writing Blog sometime this week. We are paying closer attention to detail in our writing and many of us are going back to check our spelling to make sure it is perfect (especially on those words that we can find on our word wall and around the room).

Word families have really helped us with our spelling. When we can find 'chunks' in words it helps us in not only our reading, but also our writing. We love working in our Word Family Song books and exercising to Word Family songs.

In math this week we did a lot of work with Fact Families and Collection Boxes. It seemed that most of us are really catching on and what better way to show this, then to teach it again to our peers! We started a new math journal though as you know much of Mrs. D's instruction is without the use of journals. We use the journals for added practice along with the stoplight pages she creates for us to 'choose' what level we would like to work on in math.

The highlight of the week came on Friday. For those of you who may not have known, Mrs. Doran read us "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum. We LOVED the book and had many wonderful discussions and learned a lot of new words. We loved the characters so much that we wanted more and to our delight, L. Frank Baum has written other stories about adventures in Oz, and so we are now reading, "The Marvelous Land of Oz" which introduces new characters (while keeping some of the old) to this wonderful series!

On Friday, we got to watch the movie (which is VERY different from the book and we highly recommend you read it if you haven't). Mrs. D. had planned to show the movie in the morning so that we could do some comparing and contrasting activities in the afternoon. When she went to put the movie in, she realized that she had grabbed the wrong movie disc and instead had the "Extra Features Disc" from the Wizard of Oz. Thankfully, our speech teacher, Mrs. Brown was able to run home and grab her copy so we could watch it in the afternoon. Mrs. D. was VERY thankful for this as she did not have time to run home to get her own copy. We enjoyed popcorn, juice and snacks that Luke G's and Jack's moms brought in (THANK YOU!) and had a wonderful time.

We ended our day with our Mystery Reader. Izzy's mom came in with her little sister (hiding behind the book) to read us, "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble," which is one of Mrs. D's favorite books. As always we were all ears and loved hearing her read. Having a Mystery Reader is always something we look forward to!

As always, don't forget to check out the slide show below for extra pictures from the week.
Just a reminder that Mrs. D. collects money on Monday and Tuesday for bagel orders which are delivered on Friday. It is only one dollar and any proceeds help out our school! We will have two new kinds of bagels this week. We will now be able to buy chocolate chip and asiago cheese in addition to salt or plain bagels. Thank you for supporting our school!
