Week 18 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  We had a great week of learning.  Please remember that we do not have school on Monday for Martin Luther King Day.  Our district will be celebrating and if you would like to check it out, you can view an informative video by clicking HERE.  Also, please be sure to mark your calendar for Science Night next Thursday the 23rd!  It promises to be a great night and our own Miss Coe will be there!  Mrs. Doran will be playing taxi driver for her own kids' schedules, but fun with science sound like a lot more fun!

Speaking of fun, as promised, Mrs. D. let us paint our play-doh creations that we made before the break.  We absolutely loved painting and may have to add this activity to our rewards when we complete a potato head for good reports from our FAPES teachers.  Overall we've been doing really well!  You can tell we are getting closer to second grade every day!
In math, we learned about turn around facts.  A turn around fact would look something like this: If 2+3=5 then 3+2=5.  We had a lot of fun with turn around facts and Mrs. D. even tried to stump us with really hard turn around facts, but she couldn't!  We learned that as long as we know the answer to one sum of numbers, we will know its turn-around.
We also learned about double facts.  Double facts are when you add the number twice. For example: 1+1=2, 2+2=4... etc.  We learned that all double facts are even numbers and that when we wrote them in order, the sums got bigger by 2!  We love working with patterns.  We also reviewed money and time with our wonderful parent volunteers, and with Miss Coe and Mrs. Hill.
Mrs. D. continues to test us in reading and has taken A LOT of notes on us (this binder is filled with notes about what we do in literacy alone)!  We had a guest teacher on Wednesday so Mrs. D. could test us, but Miss Coe was able to do the teaching and the guest teacher assisted.  Mrs. D. has not tested everyone but will complete testing by the end of the month.  Please continue to make reading a daily routine.  Some of us dropped from what we were reading prior to break.
We love writing and Mrs. D. was talking to us about including a beginning, middle and end to our writing.  This has us writing longer pieces.  We will continue to work on pieces with beginnings, middles and ends in the coming week.
On Friday we learned all about Dr. Martin Luther King and his life.  Miss Coe did a great lesson on how though we can look different on the outside (like the brown and white egg in the photograph), we are all the same on the inside.  Miss Coe is doing a great job and will run math workshop next week with Mrs. D. hoping in on math rotations with our wonderful parent volunteers!
We were very excited to have a Mystery Reader at the end of the day on Friday.  Hailey's dad came in and read a special book that was originally read to Hailey's mom by her grandma.  How wonderful to see great books passed down through the generations.  We loved the book and also loved asking Hailey's dad questions.  He is a police officer and we are so thankful for his service!  He taught us a lot about what he does too!

As always, this is just a snapshot of how our week went. To see more pictures, including what we did with our fifth grade buddies, be sure to check out the video below or click HERE.
