Week 1 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 and welcome!  We had a WONDERFUL week and are quickly learning the routines and expectations!  We've already been great working as a team and have enjoyed getting to know each other!

In addition to meeting each other and Mrs. Doran, we've REALLY loved meeting Little Blue who comes to learn with us when the weather is nice and comes out when we're working quietly in writer's workshop.  If you've heard anything about Room 119, odds are it was something about Blue.
We also had TWO birthdays this week!  If you have a birthday in Room 119, please let Mrs. Doran know when you would like to celebrate it so she can plan.  We do NOT allow food birthday treats but that doesn't mean we don't have fun!
Be sure to check out the blog for the fun and creative ways we celebrate.  In addition to things we choose to do, Mrs. Doran lets us take home her birthday bag and our birthday owl, Ollie.  Ollie already has spent the night with Bo and Madi and had a great time!
Mrs. D. isn't the only teacher in Room 119.  We are all teachers and learn from each other.  In addition, we all get a chance to lead the class in our calendar routine which includes editing messages Mrs. Doran writes, patterns, counting and more!
In Room 119 we have a Word Wall that we will be working with all year and will tie into our spelling.  For the first week, we just learned about our names and sorted them in different ways (ask us about it).  Our names are now on the Word Wall so we can spell them correctly when writing about friends!
We also started Readers' Workshop and learned that there are 3 ways to read a book (ask us about it).  Currently we are working on building our reading stamina so that Mrs. Doran can soon start working with small groups of us.  She will have a guest teacher next week so she can read with us individually so she can help us continue to improve!
We had a lot of fun in math and have been learning about estimating and how we can make good guesses.  We also worked on counting and how knowing numbers quickly will help with fluency.  Mrs. D. will explain this more at Curriculum Night.  Math Games were a lot of fun this week too!
On Thursday we went to Mrs. Turek's 5th grade class and met our 5th grade buddies.  We will be working with them once a week throughout the year and will have a special bond with them.  Mrs. D. loves this time of the week and also that she gets to see some of her former students working with some of her current students.
Writer's Workshop is a favorite part of the day.  Our class target has been using lower-case letters more consistently and remembering to capitalize the beginning of names.  We also worked on drawing a detailed picture so that it matched our words.

Although it was a short week, you will find Mrs. D. takes lots of pictures.  You can see them in a video by clicking HERE.  Please remember there is no school on Monday due to Rosh Hashanah and Curriculum Night is next week Wednesday at 5:30!
