Week 1 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 and Welcome!! Each week, Mrs. Doran updates this blog to give you a glimpse into how we spend our days! She hopes you enjoy it! We've had a fun week getting to know each other and we also got to meet our 5th Grade Buddies from Mrs. Turek's class! The week FLEW by for us!
Each week in Room 119, we do a project called "Thoughtful  Thursday". If you know of someone (anyone) who could use some encouragement from us, let Mrs. D. know. It is a great time of the week where we get to practice empathy and lift up others. This week, we sent a care-package of letters to Grandma Bubba. To learn more about her story and see our project, click HERE.
Mrs. D. has read lots of stories to us already. We've been focusing on learning new vocabulary words (From First Grade Jitters, we learned: trudged, clammy, slumped and jitters). We are also starting to work on our reading stamina so that Mrs. D. will be able to work with us in small groups and individually. This week we focused on "What Good Readers Do." Our ideas are posted in Room 119.
Similarly, we talked about "What Good Writer's Do." We've been writing about what we know, and on our first day of school we wrote about what we did (or didn't do) over the summer. Some of us spun a little fiction into our work which was fun. We've started Writer's Workshop and many of us have individual writing targets we're working on.  Ask us if we shared our writing this week.

On the first day of school we made a list of what math is and did a great job! We also made a graph showing how we get home from school. On the second day of school we took a beginning of the year math assessment so Mrs. D. could learn a little more about us as learners. Later in the week we focused on ordering numbers and talked about number lines. We also talked about different strategies we knew how to use to help us solve math problems.
Thank you to all who designed Doran Dollars. We voted and Mrs. D. is excited to run off our new currency. Thank you to all who offered to cut out money (you'll need to do it twice, once with paper and once when laminated). Mrs. D. ran to the store this weekend and will be running off the money (hopefully) on Monday to send home. We need to be quick because our first pay day is next Friday!
We celebrated Madi's birthday on Friday! If you have a birthday coming up and would like to celebrate, please give Mrs. D. a head's up. Please remember NOT to send in food or candy for birthdays. There are a lot of other fun options that you can check out by clicking HERE. There is also a birthday tab on Mrs. D.'s blog.

There is so much more we did this week including our class meeting/ second steps where we learned about respect and our calendar routine where we each get a turn to be the teacher and share about ourselves. To see more from this week, you can click HERE.
Also, please remember that Curriculum Night is Tuesday at  6:30. This is an evening where Mrs. D. explains to the adults in our life what we do in Room 119. Be sure to bring your questions but please make other arrangements for us, as seating will be limited (and only small chairs provided).
Have a great week!
