Week 24 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 and Happy Reading Month!  We have fun things planned for the month of March and most will center around one of our favorite authors, Dr. Seuss.  To see what fun things are planned for Reading Month, be sure to check out the blog on the right hand side under "Upcoming Events".  As always, one of the highlights of our week was Thoughtful Thursday.  This week we lifted up Patty who has battled two cases of Breast Cancer and was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Liver Cancer.  There was a twist to our project this week because Patty provided the music.  To see our project for her, you can click HERE.

The other exciting news this week is that our mealworms are now BEETLES!  Many of them have gone through a metamorphosis!  We will be able to bring them home soon.  If you would like our Beetle to come and live with you, please let Mrs. D. know via email or note.
We got new insects this week called Milkweed Bugs.  They are very small and we got them as little red eggs.  We set up two habitats for them and will be watching them grow!  On Monday we will have many more insects in our room because our Insect Reports and Models are due.  We hope to see you at our Insect Museum on Wednesday, March 11th.
Our writing this week continues to be nonfictional as we record our observations in our science journals.  We are also including things like diagrams and realistic pictures.  Next week we will continue to work on nonfiction writing.
For word study this week, we worked on the 'ice' family.  Mrs. Doran also gave us a little quiz on the family on Friday. This way you will know which word families we have covered.  We work on Word Families each week in our Word Family Songbook that will come home at the end of the year.
In reading, we are working on differentiating between fiction and nonfiction writing.  Many of us had nonfiction books this week and Mrs. D. has been encouraging us to try some nonfiction books when we 'book shop'.
In math we did a wonderful job on total-part-part questions.  What this means is that in each number model there are parts that make up a total.  In addition, the total comes at the end.  In subtraction, you start with the total and take away a part.
We enjoyed working with dominoes to make total-part-part questions and fact families!  We also took a pre-test so you can see what we've been working on.  We'll take a similar test early this upcoming week.
Every Friday during Reading Month, we will have Flashlight Friday!  Be sure to send us with a flashlight (Mrs. D. is letting us partner read).  We loved this time of day and were really on task which was wonderful!
We ended the week with some Mystery Readers! Heather's mom and dad came in and Heather's mom read us a wonderful book about the "Real" story of The Three Little Pigs~ told from the Big Bad Wolf's perspective.  She did a great job!

Of course this is just a snapshot of the week and to see more, you can click HERE.
If you visit Room 119, you'll see our door is a little different.  It is decorated as Dr. Seuss's "Yertle the Turtle" which is a wonderful book.  We have one more turtle to add (who was sick this week).  We like the way it turned out!
Also, special congratulations to Eita and Yatiri who were recognized for their art.  It will be on display at the ESC.  Great job boys!
If you lost your PIF card and would like another, please let Mrs. D. know because she'd love to give you another one.
Have a great week!
