Week 26 in Review

Greetings from Room 119! We had a wonderful week.  This week, those with parent permission joined in a social media project asking the National Cancer Institute to give more than 4% to childhood cancers.  Our Thoughtful Thursday project this weekend also happened to go to a little girl battling cancer.  To check out what we did for Lily, click HERE.

We had a lot of excitement on Tuesday when we found out that LEPRECHAUNS had broken into Room 119, messed up the place and shrunk some hats we made the day before.  It was a strange day also because we also had extra children from Mrs. Bandy's class because there were not enough substitute teachers.
Reading month had two additional Mystery Readers reading Room 119.  Mr. Guttman came to read to us.  We asked him if he was "the boss" of the schools.  We were a great audience and enjoyed him reading, "Molly Lou Mellon" to us!

We also had a Mystery Reader from our school!  Nolan's big brother wanted to read to our class and he practiced and did a great job!  We loved is book too.  He read, "There's a Moose on the Loose."

In Math this week, we are learning all about shapes.  We talked again about what polygons are and we did a great job identifying them.
We explored with shapes and learned that you can put different shapes together to make other shapes.  Rachael made hexagons using two trapezoids, three rhombuses and 6 triangles!
We also are learning about three dimensional shapes.  We sorted them into two groups (prisms and pyramids) and explored what we noticed.  We explained that prisms can be stacked, while pyramids cannot.  We also learned that some three dimensional shapes have special names like cylinder, cube, cone and sphere.
While our beetles have gone home, we still have quite a few in our classroom habitat that we are still observing.  We noticed some beetles and could tell immediately who was the youngest.  If you're not sure, ask us who the youngest in this picture is!
Mrs. Doran was not in school on Friday.  For the first time ever, she was a 'mom' on a school day.  She volunteered at one son's 5th grade camp and was a Mystery Reader in her youngest son's preschool class.  THAT was interesting!  It made her miss Room 119's first graders! :-)

Meanwhile back in Room 119, we ended the week the way we love to with a special Mystery Reader!  Taylor was so excited to learn that it was HER mom who had come to read to us!  She did a great job!

As always, these are just snapshots of what we did this week.  To see more, you can click HERE.
The marking period will be ending soon, so Mrs. D. will be testing some of us in reading to see if we are at grade level (those of us she is certain of will not need to be officially tested this marking period).  Please remember to keep reading with us at home!
