Week 34 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  We had such a busy week!  The time is ticking down but we are as busy as ever.  This week, Mrs. Doran sent home the last homework for the year but will still send home spelling/word study lists.  If you would like to still receive books, remember to email her.
Our Thoughtful Thursday project was a little different this week.  That's 94 year old Virginia pictured with us! It was such a treat to have her in.  You can learn a bit about her story by seeing her project and clicking HERE.

Much of our reading comprehension strategies come in Mrs. Doran's read-alouds.  We just finished The BFG and LOVED it! We heard that the movie is coming out on July 1st and can't wait. Mrs. Doran will not be meeting with reading groups until end of the year testing is done (which could take weeks). Until then we are working independently on fluency and comprehension in Read-aloud lessons.
It was such a fun week in writing.  We did the DWA (Developmental Writing Assessment) and were AMAZED at our growth this year.  We then reflected on our journey as writers and wrote about what we were proud of and what targets we would like to continue to work on. Mrs. D. made copies of these so you will see them in our portfolio.
We spent the week really working on telling time (and many of us continued to practice, talk and work on it in our play). 100% of those in school on Thursday mastered telling time to the 5 minutes (though we only really need to master it to the hour and half hour). Mrs. Doran likes to teach it in one lesson so we just understand it. Practice is key. To see how we learned it, you can click HERE. She is so proud of us, and our high school helper was AMAZED! She said some high schoolers don't know how to tell time.  We can teach them now. :-)
In science, we began an experiment to see the effect liquids (water) have on different types of solids. We made hypotheses and can't wait to see what happens to the solids when we return to school on Monday.
Play has been such an important part of our day this year. Mrs. Doran began doing this this year and has been amazed watching us process and play through our learning. Here, we told Mrs. Doran, "Look! We are going to make rock dust and organic material to create soil!"
We had a GREAT turnout for our Music Informance with Mrs. Aaronson! She did a wonderful job explaining her curriculum and we all had fun while learning! Mrs. D even came for a bit with her son who loved the night!
We were so excited because we all knew our Mystery Reader this week.  Evelyn's mom (who comes twice a month to help out) came in and read a wonderful story to us. We were great listeners!

And don't forget... RED NOSE DAY is next week (May 26th). Wear as much red as you can (including your nose). We are going to have so much fun being funny for money! You can still send in $1 for laugh-o-grams or make a tax deductible donation HERE to help kids in Michigan who need our help! (thank you to those who have already donated... every little bit adds up).

As always, this is just a snapshot of our learning this week.  To see additional pictures, you can click HERE.  Have a great week!
