Week 33 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 where we have had a busy week!  The weather has been warm and we have been quite loud and needed many reminders to stay on task.  Mrs. D. has been reminding us often that we still have things to do and that we need to show her that we are ready for second grade (which will be here before you know it!).

In science this week, we worked primarily with solids.  Mrs. D. gave us a 'soup' mixture, a spoon, some cups and different sized screens and told us we had to separate the different solids in the soup mixture.  It was difficult for some of us to know where to begin but with exploration, most of us learned that those screens were a big help.  We had fun sifting the solids.

We also used the dry solid ingredients and poured each ingredient into it's own bottle so we could observe it.  We poured a scoop of each ingredient in the bottle and we learned that some solids had many pieced in a scoop while others (like the lima beans) only had a few because they were so large.  We really worked well together in our problem solving.

As we near the end of the school year, Mrs. D. will be doing a lot of review with us and (of course) some testing to assess where we are so she can give that information to our next year's teacher.  One fun way we reviewed was using a flower (instead of a name collection box) to show all the different ways we could 'show' a number.  They turned out really nice!
Our reading and writing went hand in hand this week.  We worked on Expanding our vocabulary again (the "E" on our CAFE board) by looking for good juicy words in the books that we were reading.  In one of her mini-lessons, Mrs. D. read us a book where the author used a lot of great words instead of using the word "ran" over and over.  We reported out the words we found and then worked at fitting 'better' words into our writing.  We all still LOVE using the word "ecstatic" from one of Mrs. D.'s earlier lessons in the year.  Now we need to find some more juicy words!
And finally we ended the week with our Mystery Reader.  Yana thought that the Mystery Reader may be her brother and it was!  She was very excited and he read us two books.  Her brother is in the Army so we also asked him some questions about that.  It was neat to have a hero in our classroom.
As always, there are more pictures below in the slide show.  Please remember that there will be no more bagel sales this year and also that this week will be Spirit Week!  Don't forget to show your school spirit!
