Week 34 in Review

Greetings from Room 119 and a special thank you to all of those brave men and women who have served our country both past and present!  You are our HEROES!

At the beginning of the week, we learned about other heroes in history at our school's Wax Museum.  The 5th Graders dressed up as famous people from history and we got to visit them (press their 'buttons') and they would tell us about their lives.  We learned a lot and it was fun seeing all our 5th Grade Buddies share their hard work.
With the end of the school year in sight (though there still seems so much to do), Mrs. D. has begun some final testing with us.  It has been fun for her to see how we've grown.  Here we were working on a quick writing assessment.  Mrs. D. can't wait for us to bring home our writing portfolios to share with you!
She also began giving us our end of the year Math Benchmark.  She has learned that while we will continue to work up to the last day of school, some of us start to kick into 'summer mode'.  We had A LOT of talks about behavior this week.  Wednesday was a really bad day for us but by Friday we were better.  Still Mrs. D. is trying to get us at our best and continue to keep us motivated to learn and make good choices in the classroom.
Science is always a highlight in our room.  This week we combined solids and liquids to see what would happen.  We learned that not all solids react the same in liquids (water).  Some solids stayed exactly the same while others (like crackers) changed shape and still others (salt) seemed to disappear all-together.  When we return next week Mrs. D. told us the water would 'evaporate' and we can't wait to see what happens then!
Our Mystery Reader was unable to come Friday but we still had a wonderful person read to us!  Mrs. D's former first grader Miss Rosevear read us a book and did a GREAT job!  She is a future teacher and we were excited that she got to read to us!
On Friday we also learned about Memorial Day and what it is really about.  Mrs. D. found a short video for us where we could see Memorials from around our country that honor our Veterans.  We are so thankful for their service and were shocked at the number of people who have fought (and given their lives) to keep our freedoms.
We have been writing some reflective pieces during workshop.  Mrs. D. has been reminding us to form our letters correctly (we have been doing a lot with handwriting too) in our notebooks and keep things neat and organized with periods, capitals... etc.  It is hard to believe that in a few weeks we'll be second graders!
On Friday we went to the computer lab for the last time (with our volunteers and Mrs. Doran).  Remember that we can still do the Everyday Math  Games on our home computers with our log-ins and passwords.  If you forgot our log-in and password, contact Mrs. D. and she can get it for you.
One of the highlights of the week was that we let our butterflies go.  We had three butterflies that emerged from their Chrysalises so we went to a corner in our playground that was near gardens (we wanted our butterflies to be around flowers).  Two of our butterflies flew away and we were so excited to see them go!
One butterfly didn't make it though.  His Chrysalis fell and so when he emerged his wings bent and did not form correctly so he couldn't fly. Mrs. D. has been feeding him by hand and we were excited when she held him so we could get a nice close up look!
As always, please click below to see more exciting things from Room 119!  Mrs. D. took a lot of pictures from Spirit Week, a surprise treat  and more!
