Week 14 in Review

Greetings from Room 119!  It has been a bit warm lately, but the temperatures should be falling soon (we want snow!).  Make sure you label all of our coats, hats and mittens.  December seems to be the time that the Lost and Found overfloweth. Writing our names in our things will really help!

Speaking of help, thank you to all of you who have donated (or plan to donate) blankets and slippers.  The children at Mott's Children Hospital thank you too!
December is a month full of holidays!  Happy Hanukkah to those who are celebrating right now.  Last week Mrs. D read us some books about Hanukkah and next week we will continue to learn more about their traditions thanks to Kirra and her family.

This week we met "Bossy E" and how he works.  You don't ever hear him but he can really change the way words are pronounced.  This has helped us decode words and throughout the week we were pointing out Bossy E because he sure shows up a lot!
We've also been focusing on the "Long" vowels (or vowels who say their name).  There are a lot of ways to write long vowel words and the Bossy E is just one way.  We focused on Long I this week and went for a search of words in our books.  We found words spelled with "y", "igh", "ie" and others.  We felt like detectives hunting for words and had a lot of fun.
Of course decoding is just one aspect of reading and we also continued to work on visualization. We enjoy sharing our ideas and what we 'see' with our buddies when Mrs. D. reads to us.  We really are doing a wonderful job and love sharing!

We continued to work on measurement this week and had fun when Mrs. D. measured how tall we are.  Next week, we are going to graph our heights and work more on telling time (this time to the quarter hour).  We also learned about "Total-Part-Part" problems.  When we first learned about them, we practiced using dominoes.  Now we are able to do them with numbers.  We made up all sorts of problems and some of us really tried to challenge ourselves!
On Friday we had our special Mystery Reader!   Some of the girls recognized our Mystery Reader because she is also a cheerleading coach but it was Maddie E who was the most excited when Mrs. D. opened the door and it was her mom standing there.  She read us a wonderful book and we were a great audience despite it being a Friday in December!
