Happy New Year Greetings from Room 119. We hope you had a wonderful break. We had a very short week (only two days), but it was a wonderful way to ease back into the routine of school and we loved seeing each other and sharing all the adventures we had over break.
The New Year has brought us a lot of snow and COLD temperatures. Please consider putting an extra pair of dry socks in our backpacks. Also, please write our names on ALL of our snow- gear. Even though Mrs. D. suggests we keep our hats and gloves in the sleeves of our coat, we still sometimes find a random item that belongs to no one, or someone loses an item and we can't find it. Writing names makes this so much easier! Thank you in advance!
We got right back into our regular routines after the break. During our transition time, Mrs. D. always plays our class song (located at the top of this blog). This song is also the song we will be dancing to in the Variety Show coming up later this month. We can't wait to show it to you so hope you can all come to the evening event at WLN. Check the Upcoming Events on Mrs. D.'s blog to see what's coming up in January.

In math we are learning more about place value. We used longs and cubes to help us with this. Mrs. D. has been referring to the manipulatives as tens and ones to make it easier when we talk about place value. We also touched briefly on zero place holders when writing numbers like 403 and that the zero means there are zero tens. We'll work on this more in the coming weeks.
It was great to get back to writing again. We enjoyed writing about our breaks and sharing our writing with each other. In the coming weeks, we are going to start editing our writing and becoming more aware of conventions and spelling our word wall words correctly all the time. Some of us also really need to make sure our handwriting is neat and legible.
We met with our fifth grade buddies on Friday and Mrs. Turek read us a book called Snowflake Bentley which is a biography about Wilson Bentley who found that no two snowflakes are alike.
Then, Mrs. Doran taught us all how to make snowflakes. We had a lot of fun and no two of our snowflakes turned out exactly alike! We had some help from our buddies and we look forward to hanging up our snowflakes sometime next week.
And we ended our short week the way we end every week in Room 119... with a special Mystery Reader! Iden and Isaac's dad came in and read us "Where the Wild Things Are." He did a great job and we even got to participate by roaring our terrible roars, gnashing our terrible teeth, rolling our terrible eyes and showing our terrible claws!
